How can the US combat the spread of misinformation? Maybe by taking a page out of Finland's book -- media education in public schools. Middle school teacher Saara Martikka & the Natl Audiovisual Institute's Leo Pekkala share their efforts. #velshi https://www.msnbc.com/ali-velshi/watch/view-from-finland-misinformation-fight-begins-with-education-161183301578
@velshi
The press could engage in education too instead of being shadows of Fox and doing polls.

@velshi

Ali, you or we will never silence misinformation. Education will certainly never suffice! I know too many well educated Trump supporters who would prefer death to understanding that he is a con!

In the words of Dr Gustave LeBon who wrote in his 1895 publication "The Crowd" ...

@velshi That would be great. But how likely is it when entire states (like #Florida) are outlawing the accurate teaching of #history?
@velshi All true, but the guys in congress who would have to pass and fund that are currently the same guys spreading the misinformation. So this is probably a nonstarter.

@velshi

Those key MPs and Ministers in the UK Tory party - former journalist Micheal Gove - who have had persistent objections to #medialiteracy initiatives?

...later became - and remain - avid champions of #Brexit. 🧐

@velshi Won’t happen in Florida but wherever it can it should be incorporated into the curriculum.
@velshi We had media education in school back in the 1960s in Ohio. We had units on advertisers using “glittering generalities” and “plain folks” and “paid celebrity endorsements” to sell their products. All good lessons easily applied to todays media.
@velshi Absolutely, education can solve a lot of problems…..giving the young information, choices, options and also a way out of poverty….
@velshi We don’t even have civics in school any more.
