Two million French folk take to the streets in a wave of strikes and protests against a proposal to raise the pension age from 62 to 64.

Meanwhile in the UK: "Mustn't grumble. When's 'Strictly' on?"

@alanferrier the thing about the English is that they’re absolutely fucking useless.

@alanferrier

Do you reckon the French could slip us some instructions on how to build guillotines?

@alanferrier I was in one of these protests on Thursday, in a small city, we were about 12 000, which is huge! It’s good to see people can still rally against patently stupid decisions that go against the people’s interests. Let’s hope it doesn’t do down after a few weeks!
@alanferrier Meanwhile in the US: "People still get pensions?"

@liamsora @alanferrier 37 year Ironworkers Union member in the US, and here to say some of us do still get pensions, and more should.

And in fine French fashion I retired at 62.

@alanferrier There are multiple strikes planned across numerous industries. Nurses, mail workers, teachers, rail workers, junior doctors - that just off the top of my head.

@alanferrier Should have been French, could retire in a week's time. In les Pays-Bas we'll have to sit it out for another 5 years, until 67
@alanferrier solidarity with the French people! Awesome to see the protests!!
@alanferrier I read not long ago that as life expectancy increases the US will also consider raising the retirement age. Makes me furious to think about. As a young person I already feel like I’ll have to work until I die. Retirement is just a dream. I hope the French win their fight.
@alanferrier the rest of us need to learn to protest like the french
@alanferrier : And in the US, not a murmur as Republicans hold the economy hostage so they can raise the age to 70.
@alanferrier The french are on strike too? Taking notes 🇬🇧

@alanferrier

⬆️ ⬆️ ⬆️ ⬆️ ⬆️

When the Republicans come to slash Social Security and raise the retirement age (to 70?), will we take to the streets, too?

History suggests the answer will be no.

@alanferrier I've always admired the French's drive and desire to get out on the street to confront power and effect change...
@alanferrier I hope Republicans in Congress are watching.
@alanferrier
The UK is mostly beaten, broken, crushed, spineless.
@alanferrier
And in the US, like their former colonizers, will bend over and take it.
And protesters will be told to get a job that they can work at until they die.

@alanferrier Where’s my cap? I’ll need to doff it.
@alanferrier
It isn't as if the present government pulled out the reform out of a magic hat though, is it? Macron made no secret on pension reform during his re-election campaign, and still got in. I'm more concerned with the repeated recourse to 49.3 to get things through parliament - that's a very worrying trend, more than the principle of pension reform, and I say that as an independent who will already have to work until age 67 to get a full pension, whatever that might be at the time.
@alanferrier meanwhile in Australia: "Let's make them all grind away until they're 70!" - Legislated by grossly overpaid politicians who hardly ever worked a day in their lives (#joehockey) 😒
@alanferrier The smaller the housing gets in the UK, the larger the flat screen TVs.
People have to wake up and get their minds out of The Box

America needs more unions -Solidarity ✊🏻!
