@mmasnick Can she, like, bill her client for that?
@theLastTheorist @mmasnick No. They're jointly and severally liable, so everyone is responsible just as much as everyone else. Which, if Ms. Habba and her firm want to continue practicing law, means that they are probably going to pay because God knows Trump isn't good for it.
@halfcocked @theLastTheorist @mmasnick If nothing else, I'd be quite interested in how all the levy/garnishment actions work out against Trump, even though surely the attorneys would be much easier (assuming they have the assets).

@theLastTheorist @mmasnick

"She also indicated that, while Mr. Trump doubted the suit would succeed, she nevertheless
“fought” to pursue it:"(p4).

@wren @mmasnick It's weird that anyone will even make him a taco salad without payment in advance.

@theLastTheorist @mmasnick

There's a whole lotta weird mixed in this salad.

@theLastTheorist @mmasnick good luck with that, considering past reports. She might have a "DJT exclusive access to Mara Lago venue" worth a third of a million, plus 1/5 of a 3 million worth racing horse (now dead), even if she were entitled.
@mmasnick I don’t think I’ve ever seen sanctions that high.
@Popehat @mmasnick does that make it more likely that there’s a way out for Habba or are they pretty much effed and have to pay up?
@GeneParmesan @Popehat @mmasnick Presumably, this is can be appealed, though, so the world keeps spinning for a bit longer before this reaches finality.

@Popehat @mmasnick

Is it wrong that I chuckled when I read that?

@nlarson830 @Popehat @mmasnick

We've waited a looong time for this laugh. Enjoy it guilt-free. 😁

@wren @Popehat @mmasnick

🤭 I mean Ken's seen a lot so that makes me chuckle more 🤭

@Popehat he won’t pay.
@mikec415 @Popehat maybe (probably?) not, but maybe more impactful is what this does to anyone’s willingness to work for him. Whose willing to risk a million dollars in sanctions to file his next nonsense suit?
@mgaruccio @mikec415 @Popehat
Unfortunately, there's always another sucker, another person who genuinely falls victim to the man's cult of personality and thinks that they, alone, have the legal chops to successfully prosecute a case with less evidentiary standing than Russell's Teapot.
@theogrin @mikec415 @Popehat your probably right, but it’s hard to believe there’s a kind of law firms waiting to risk that kind of $ on a client already known for not paying their bills.

@mgaruccio @mikec415 @Popehat

Hard as it is to believe, by the time the suit was filed Trump had already shown a long-standing commitment to never settling his obligations, and still they lined up in the hopes that he might invite him into his circle of illusory wealth and fame, like Bernie Madoff but with even less justification.

P.T. Barnum never actually said "There's a sucker born every minute," but the phrase certainly seems to hold true, even amongst those smart enough to pass the bar.

@Popehat @mmasnick my rapper stage name is “Sanctions” and even I haven’t been that high.
@Popehat @mmasnick What would stop him from paying this fine, then reimbursing himself out of his PAC and calling it a political expense?
@Popehat @mmasnick So assume Trump is Trump and refuses to pay. Does this mean that the other two named parties (Habba and her firm) are responsible for all of it and the court's "solution" to the inequity is "Sue him for it"?
@Popehat @mmasnick My husband and I (both litigators) had the same reaction. Personally, I would like to see more sanctions for frivolous lawsuits and appeals, but even I was shocked by that number.

@Popehat @mmasnick

What gets me is that most of the top-flight attorneys on the defense willingly took hourly cuts from 28% to *66%*, I assume to preclude Trump and Habba from griping overmuch about pay scales. (There was still a token objection over block billing.)

They could have probably justifiably bumped that up to a million and a half, and after the shenanigans displayed throughout, it's not hard to imagine Middlebrooks handing it to them.

@mmasnick so for Trump this is couch-cushion money but I'm gathering this is super bad for the law firm?
@Pxtl @mmasnick Only if you believe he's as rich as he pretends to be. He's got debts up the wazoo and most of his 'assets' are not liquid.
@mmasnick Incredible stuff! Very glad this court doesn't bow to rhetoric like a good chunk of the public seems to.

@mmasnick Imagine what it must be like for Habba.

Not only does she have these sanctions hanging over her head, she knows with absolute certainty that her client will never, ever pay his share of the fine.

She is going to have to pony up the money and ocne again he will get off without any consequences.

@Danielsand @mmasnick

At this point, it’s safe to assume every one associated with him knows he’s not going to pay them. They’ve accepted “other arrangements,” right?

@mmasnick
Can somebody explain this to me like I’m a five-year-old? #eli5
@mmasnick The whole was a delicious read.
@mmasnick the Judge was visibly irritated by the sloppy conduct of plaintiff lawyers and the personal attacks to he himself. I wonder if this will have an impact on an appeal. Though the order seems entirely accurate, there are a couple if shortcuts taken here and there, but I have insufficient experience in US litigation to judge.

@mmasnick

So would this influence potential sanctions in the other cases cited to show a pattern of frivolous proceedings brought by Trump and legal team, Pulitzer, Twitter and CNN?

Just wondering if this is only the first of a series of 7 figure payouts incoming on Mr Trump and his learned friends.

@RojCowles who knows. judges very rarely grant sanctions, but in other cases we have seen a kind of "damn breaks" nature where once one judge does, others follow. Of course, with Trump, who knows.
@mmasnick Is it true that the court only refers to itself in the first person if you really fuck around?
@mmasnick It's hilarious that Trump immediately dropped another of his frivolous lawsuits after this ruling.
@KevinCarson1 can't afford more sanctions...
@mmasnick @cda i love that he has to pay Hillary for this frivolous harassment of her and just another instance of his chronic abuse of the legal system
@mmasnick @cda …and well looky what have we got here? someone suddenly getting cold feed about abusing the justice system? https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/20/politics/donald-trump-letitia-james-trust-lawsuit/index.html
