Jews do not proselytize to non-Jews, but when it comes to other Jews, the matter can be controversial. We asked rabbis from various denominations: should Jews promote their religious choices to Jews who have chosen differently? https://momentmag.com/ask-the-rabbis-proselytizing/ #religion #spirituality #judaism #jewish #orthodoxjew #orthodoxjudaism #chabad #hasidic #spirituality

@Sethlsanders Awesome, thank you! I ended up emailing the author to get a copy 😂
@sheepchase I have to say that the author's brusque way of dealing with complex biblical and rabbinic sources is not my style, but it's still clearly a very interesting piece.

@Sethlsanders Yeah I think he could probably go deeper but needed to make the salient points fit into the article.

His main position is clearly that ‘reason’ (and that includes reasonable views of community) beat ‘faith’ (particularly in the world-to-come as seen by non-Jews).

He’s a philosopher not a rabbi I guess.

@sheepchase Yeah faith has an interesting role in Judaism--the distinction is often exaggerated (see for example Maimonides top 13 things you need to believe to be a good Jew) but it's true that there's an unusual emphasis on non-rational internal states in some flavors of Christianity!
@Sethlsanders Yeah it was basically me being constantly hassled by Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses here that led me to see proselytizing as violence… and that led me to that paper. Like, just leave me alone - I don’t have your faith and your pressuring me isn’t helping! 😂
