It's not 'America' coming apart!

Its a schism between Americans who support a multicultural, multiracial, multilingual America that centers fair socioeconomic opportunity for all

& those that want a theocratic Christian evangelical white ethnostate that centers economic elites

@black_intellect The American problem, if one simply goes by election results, is that there are an equal number of Americans on each side of the divide.
@Gordon1956 @black_intellect The pool of people who actually vote is nowhere close to the actual demographics of the U.S. It only appears to be a country split 50/50 because of historical artifacts around the way we do our federal system (eg electoral college & 2 senators per state) and voter suppression.
@sfierbaugh @black_intellect Regardless of the electoral college, 74 million Americans cast their vote for Trump. 74 million vs the 81 million that voted for Biden. That's a country divided to me, and a country where a huge number of people supports a pathological liar, and criminal.
@Gordon1956 @black_intellect Yes, but that's 150M out of twice that many total. Half the country either can't vote or doesn't care enough to vote. That's bad but not the same as saying half the country supports a criminal. Really, about 1/4 the country supports a criminal. Which is actually still pretty sad... 😞
@sfierbaugh @black_intellect That's 150 million Americans of "voting" age. Not every living American is old enough to vote. And at 66.8%, the 2020 election had the highest eligible voter turnout in the 21st century. It wasn't like people were disinterested and stayed home. It was the highest voter turnout in decades. And almost half of those voters, supported a criminal and pathological liar. I don't see how anyone can conclude the country is not divided.
@Gordon1956 @black_intellect I'm not suggesting it isn't divided. I'm suggesting it isn't a simple 50/50 divide. It's a double divide. Half the country passionately cares and the other half doesn't or is prevented (age or voter suppression). Of the half that cares, half of that support a criminal.
@sfierbaugh @black_intellect Hi Stephen. My last thoughts on this. Highest voter turnout in the 21st century, the highest turnout since 1960. Voters were engaged. 74 million voted for Trump, 81 million voted for Biden. That's a country very nearly equally divided. Happy New Year to you and yours.
@Gordon1956 So you're saying the US only has 155 million people over the age of 18, cause the 2020 census says there's 258.3 million people over 18.
@sfierbaugh @black_intellect
@lunar No. I said 66.8% of eligible voters (see earlier discussion) voted, and of those, 74 million voted for Trump, and 81 million voted for Biden. In any poll, those numbers would absolutely and accurately reflect the voting intentions of 100% the eligible population.
@Gordon1956 except voting has a selection bias where only the more wealthy people can vote and poorer people are dissuaded from voting through threats of violence, so your extrapolation would just be wrong. This is why conservatives push for voter suppression, it's the only way they can stay in power.
@lunar Except that at 66%, the 2020 election had the highest voter turnout in the Divided States since the 1960's, and that percentage is as high, and exceeds, the voting rate that occurs in most democracies. And because the majority voted Democrat, voter suppression by the conservatives is not a determining factor in extrapolating the voting intentions of the majority. I didn't hear anyone in the Divided States shouting that they couldn't get to the polls.
