Hi all,

As a #FediTips, if you wish to follow any @write_as blogs, you will need to take the URL of their blog and paste it into the search bar. That will bring up that specific blog. You can then follow it in Mastodon.

See my screenshot for how I found mine:

#writers #writing #Writeas

@Aaidanbird @write_as

That doesn't work in mastodon.

It works in just about ALL #Fediverse server platforms.

Other than that, your #tip was spot on, but also...

From basically any #Fediverse server, you can simply paste their Fediverse address into your "address bar", immediately after the URL of your servers address, like so, for example:

https://mastodon.sdf.org/@tallship@public.mitra.social

Where "@ tallship @ public.mitra.social" is that user's address (without the spaces between the "@" signs, of course)

This works in mastodon, the search field allows lots of different things!

You can search the entire URL https://...
You can even easier just search the person by @[email protected]

What I think is really nice, since the #fediverse is all in different places, if you want to find a post on a different server you can drag the timestamp to the search bar of your server (which will have the full URL of that post on a different server) and the post will show up to like and boost!

@Aliocantinea

@[email protected] works if your server is federated with that server. If your server doesn't know that server (as in they never had to pull data for that server and that server isn't on their blocked/suspended list), then URL is best way to pull up that person. The URL forces your server to look up that other one and pull the data. Tested this strategy.

I shared to show how to access other #Fediverse platforms that may not be "in network" yet with your server using the URL. #FediTips

@Aaidanbird
Oooh the more you know!

I didn't actually realize that could even happen, I guess I just see it all as connected but you make great point about blocked/suspended servers. Thanks for the extra knowledge!

@Aliocantinea

To Clarify: If the server is blocked/suspended by your server, you may not be able to pull up anyone. If the server is set to "Limited" by your server, then using URL will 100% of the time pull up that person if the @ method fails.

If your server has never talked to that other server (common with smaller ones), then there is no data shared between them yet. So pulling the person with the @ method often fails. URL will work to cement that bond 100% of the time.

@Aliocantinea and welcome!

I think the biggest hurdle I've found for folks is how to get your server (especially smaller ones) talking to another server that it hasn't ever talked with (as no one has followed anyone on that other server yet). It's explained well in this document: https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-mastodon-and-the-fediverse-advanced-tips/ I forget under which heading though. lol

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse

@Aaidanbird Great link, I will have to read a lot more about it I guess!! I like the idea of hosting my own but didn't really think about having issues with talking to other servers!

@Aliocantinea

I point this out as outside of Mastodon -- for example, write freely blogs -- can't always be pulled up using that @[email protected] method.

When that method fails, go to the URL. Copy that and put that in the search bar. I have had success doing this 100% of the time. I notice that people on other Fediverse platforms that are seeable by Mastodon can be located this route too. #FediTips

@Aliocantinea @Aaidanbird

Yes exactly what I said 🙂 across virtually all Fediverse server platforms.

Thanks for sharing that graphic with everyone, because no matter what type of #Fediverse server platform your account is on, it works pretty much the same and the graphic shows that it's much easier than it is to explain lolz 😂

Thanks again for sharing!

From one Bradley to another ;)

I do thank you for your input, an sk although I've been "Fediverse'ing", so to speak, for several years, I must say I had never tried to drag & drop that way. It must be coz I'm a UNIX guy lolz.

Thank you for that little tip, s time saver indeed!

Let me also extend a personal, welcoming invitation to participate in the "Fediverse City" room where devs and regular users with 5 to improve the user experience!
