Never mind you can't ski in the Alps this winter. Think about the empty rivers in spring and all the failed harvests this summer all over Europe.
@LeonEoW this will only be the start. For the next (at least) 30 years this will not change any more.
Maybe in a few years the politicians will want to change drastically enough. (but it could take several years before it comes into action)

@LeonEoW

The truth is that still a lot of people go skiing and the ski areas invest much efforts to enable that.
And a lot of people get hurt because the pistes are narrow and crowded
weird!

@LeonEoW Wow! Where is that photo from?
@danyork If I remember correctly from an article about the lack of snow in Switzerland. Could be stock photo from somewhere else.
@LeonEoW stop thinking two steps ahead. People are gonna get brainfreezzes in a scorching heatwave ;)
@fatalisticcritic I must admit I'm often baffled that most people can't think beyond the now.

@LeonEoW Not to forget: what water will run the hydro plants or cool the nuclear reactors?

There are still chances of some more precipitation though, so let's hope for that and done cooler weather.

@LeonEoW or the damage to the nature because of all the people that want to ski…

@LeonEoW

Those things mostly affect poor people. But SKIING darling!! /s

@LeonEoW Mensen leren hier niet van. Het ergste met het hele COVID gebeuren vond men niet op vakantie te kunnen….. naar Griekenland of Turkije.
@LeonEoW
Carbon addicted humanity…?! > Rehab!
@LeonEoW De echte grote chaos komt er nog aan.
@LeonEoW Yes, that is more scaring 😱
@LeonEoW Great post. Where and when was this picture taken?
@Rclarkphelps No idea. It comes from an article about lack of snow in Switzerland but could as well be a stock photo.
It's just illustrative. Posts work better with pics. QED
European ski resorts close because there's no snow

Higher temperatures and heavy rain have stripped many European ski resorts of snow, prompting half of France's 7,500 ski slopes to close and raising concerns over long-term prospects for the continent's winter sports season.

CNN Travel
@LeonEoW And comparison pictures from the CNN article.
@Rclarkphelps Yes, I saw that too. It could have been the pic for my post but I decided otherwise for no special reason.
@LeonEoW also, if it stays that way, forget about staying on huts this summer. A lot of huts simply will not be able to open, if they don't have water from snowfields.
Neue Prager Hütte already closed at the beginning of August last year after running out of water.
If this trend continues, the same will be true for a lot of huts this year.
And those who can open, will not be able to offer showers, and so on.

@LeonEoW well, the people who ski in the alps will have no issues with empty rivers and failed harvests, because they can afford whatever they fancy.

This is the demography whose status is what politicians will cater to.

Shielding the upper middle class from all consequences of climate change will be the #1 priority of our governments.

Expect ski halls being built in the alps.

@kryphos @LeonEoW I wish I was so rich as you describe :) Yeah, middle class will soon stop affording skiing, while the rich will still fly their private jets to places with snow.
@LeonEoW und die schwindenden Transportmöglichkeiten der Binnenschifffahrt. Mit steigenden Verbraucherpreisen.
@kurtus51 That too. I just decided to limit the message to something very basic. But the consequences are wide and enormous.
@LeonEoW You are fully right. And we dont know the full consequences of that disaster till now.
The climate gave us the chance over decades to act and save our survive. But we didnt understand and didnt want to change anything.
@LeonEoW Wer da Ski fährt, ist pervers!
@LeonEoW Europe isn‘t the Athabasca. Snow melt has often been the cause of spring flooding, but harvests depend much more on the summer rains in the plains.
Precipitation has been insufficient since 2018 at least, but it actually picked up a bit this winter. Only it’s coming down as rain, rather than snow. So the situation is critical but probably not more so than in recent years.
@LeonEoW looking forward to everything becoming even more expensive :tiredcat:
@LeonEoW
THIS, precisely.
I am absolutely terrified by the coming hot season here in my corner of the world, inhabited by appx 28 million people: high temps, no rain, no water, huge electricity consumption. We are one of the most affluent regions of the planet: I really want to see how govt’s will be able to implement water bans and rolling blackouts.

@LeonEoW On the other hand, the larger than usual snowpack in the mountains of CA and the Pacific Northwest are liable to cause a new round of flooding from snowmelt come Spring, on top of the floods and mudslides from the recent atmospheric rivers.

PS: This will be the second year of probable empty rivers in Europe.

@LeonEoW
But at least people who own shares in fossil fuel companies made a little more money for a few decades. Wasn't that more important?
