Remember, there’s infrastructure, and then there’s Dutch infrastructure.

@BrentToderian
Love the bikepath and road tunnel, but what about a tunnel for small creatures as a wildlife corridor? Or am I just not seeing it?
@takvera @BrentToderian I don't know this location, but they do have these in several places!
@takvera @BrentToderian They exist, just not in this location.
@takvera @BrentToderian there’s one in the ‘Midden-Delfland region’ google eco-aquaduct Zweth & slinksloot
@BrentToderian @leyrer emphasis on the cycle path. Also it's very likely that it won't go down/up in one swoop but you'll have parts of it that are even. 👌
@BrentToderian
Infrastructure is one thing the Dutch do very, very well. Perhaps this comes from being in a centuries long war against the very sea itself.
— Nellie + Mags
@BrentToderian there's one or two of these in Virginia
@drahcir_rahl @BrentToderian been across that one many times.
@BrentToderian omg I need to show my dad! Do you know the name of the bridge?
@marielucy @BrentToderian Veluwemeer Aqueduct
@BrentToderian @opendna thanks! The dutchman/avid sailor will love this!🤗⛵️
@marielucy @BrentToderian it’s Called “Aquaduct Veluwemeer” in the Netherlands, but “Gouwe Aquaduct” is the same concept.
@BrentToderian do they use Roman concrete? 😉
@BrentToderian This is one of my favorite pieces of infrastructure
@BrentToderian cool move by the captain to cross the bridge under sails
@BrentToderian I must be a bit dumb. Could someone explain how this bridge work ?
@clarinette
It may become obvious when you don't picture it as a bridge for the water, but as a very short tunnel under a canal for the street.
@BrentToderian
@BrentToderian quite beautiful@indeed. Went to watch a video https://youtu.be/lmq9U3QI9CU

@BrentToderian
There are others, not just in the Netherlands. We sailed over one at Carentan in France.
@amokura Rather impressed the first time I went under this one for the first time, when I was a child ! Dad ! The boat is on the water, on top of our car ! ^_^
@BrentToderian note how the separate bike path doesn't decend as far as the road so cyclists have less of a climb either side.

@BrentToderian

So little structure! So much infra! And a cycle lane, of course a cycle lane, but such a cycle lane!

@BrentToderian Dutch infrastructure is the best infrastructure.

@BrentToderian Beautiful photo.

We have bridges w/tunnels that go under water in the US too. I can't think about it much before I head into one or I get freaked out 😅

@BrentToderian
They have literally created a larger country day by day.They have invented Outfra-structure reclaimation.
@BrentToderian Disney World has a few water bridges, proving they can be built in the US.
@BrentToderian it's like a wildlife overpass, but for smal boats!
Trogbrücke Magdeburg – Deutschland hat die längste Kanalbrücke der Welt

Die Trogbrücke Magdeburg ist ein Zeugnis überragender Ingenieurskunst. Und hält gleich mehrere beeindruckende Rekorde.

TRAVELBOOK
@BrentToderian Being pedantic here but maybe HashtagAqueduct also! And agree, is stunning... completely disproves the notion that modern infrastructure cannot be beautiful 😍
@BrentToderian I just imagine the guy who invented the drawbridge seeing this and smacking his forehead saying “god, I’m an idiot!”
@BrentToderian
The good news is that with global warming we too will soon be able to have our land based infrastructure below sea level
@TransitBiker
@BrentToderian Destined to become the next shitposting argument: is it a bridge or is it a tunnel?
@BrentToderian This is so fascinating! I keep looking at it over and over. The U.S. spends a lot on "band aid" projects that end up in disconnection, spaghetti traffic patterns, and confusion/frustration. This example is multi-functional and elegant.

@BrentToderian
Big shout out to the photographer that's an excellent pic!

The Dutch kick ass at infrastructure.

"Dang, the tides are really causing issues here on this river."

"We have just built a giant swinging water-gate and the issue is sorted."

@BrentToderian The transportation aspects are cool, but I was mostly looking at the trees!
@BrentToderian Is it just very pretty, or does it actually have any advantages over the usual bridge with cars on top? Looks like it requires more maintenance, as you want to prevent any leak, and the constant weight of that water must be a concern, isn’t it?
@BrentToderian This makes me so homesick. No one has a more brilliant relationship with water than Dutch engineers
