Something too on the nose about McCarthy finally winning the Speaker vote—not because enough people voted for him—but because he prevented enough votes against him.

Another reminder that the GOP knows they can’t win on candidate popularity so they run & win on voter suppression.

@QasimRashid — Yeah, and McCarthy’s selfie with Marjorie was a nice reminder that the “fun” is just beginning. And by “fun,” I mean things like defaulting on our debts and abandoning Ukraine. Heaven help us all.

@QasimRashid

That angle of it didn't even hit me, just that the only way he could win was handicapped. Excellent point.

@QasimRashid time for changes. Can’t be that if we wait long enough or get tired the one that was not voted in is voted in. 😖
@QasimRashid I figure he gave away the farm to win. He will probably be the weakest speaker in history.

@QasimRashid

Simply for self protection those who participated in attempting to overthrow the government needed one of their own.

@mechtild55 @QasimRashid is there any possibility that a friendly speaker could protect them from criminal prosecution.

@Mike_Morpheus @QasimRashid

Speaker and committee chairs will try to prevent any incriminating documents & communications from coming to light. Obstruction of justice.

But as Lyn said the Speaker has no power over a criminal proceeding itself.

@mechtild55 @Mike_Morpheus @QasimRashid The January 6th Committee already sent all of their evidence to the Justice Department and the FBI so idk what the sedition caucus can obstruct at this point. I mean, I guess other crimes, but again, seems like there is plenty of evidence of crimes already.

@vashbandy @Mike_Morpheus @QasimRashid

Yes I agree, Vash.

What makes me suspicious is it seems every week new incriminating texts and emails come to light.

The fake elector plans were hatched in coordination with State legislators and Secretaries of States.

Same with finding out about communications with the outlaw militia groups like the Proud Boys and with folks like Flynn, Giuliani and Stone. Boebert prime candidate there.

@vashbandy @mechtild55 @QasimRashid agreed … and yet no one with clout except TFG and his cronies (who the gop are desperately trying to distance themselves from) has been charged.😔
@Mike_Morpheus @vashbandy @mechtild55 @QasimRashid they’re working their way up. Once an indictment happens, the investigation stops. Only a foolish prosecutor would run to charge someone before they have all the facts.
@QasimRashid I'm not disagreeing with the overall argument, but surely notifying as 'present' is the same as abstention not a forced absence (removal). But what it does indicate is the GOP in the end wants power & its Trumpian wing will merely now start to hold each vote to ransom for concessions (or have I read the situation wrongly, looking at it from a distance)
@QasimRashid Let's be fair. There's a difference between preventing someone from voting at all, and talking them into voting "meh".
@QasimRashid You’d have thought American would have had their fill of McCarthys the first time around.
@QasimRashid they are experts on voter suppression. About the only thing they have any expertise in. Except lying they're masters at lying.
@QasimRashid Great parallel! They can at least claim being consistent 🤣
@QasimRashid He won plurality, not a majority. Six MAGA republicans voted present to lower the winning margin enough for McCarthy to win. This means he'll struggle when he faces a no confidence vote. It would only take six republicans with democrats to oust him. And it only takes one republican to request a vote.
@wsrphoto @QasimRashid Minor correction: it only takes one member of the House to request a vote (including Democrat members).
@wsrphoto @QasimRashid I don't see the Democrats voting to oust him just because one of the Freedom Caucus is throwing a tantrum again. Not unless they can get the Speaker position and that isn't going to be an option.

@[email protected] @[email protected] Kevin McCarthy has literally sold his soul to Satan and Antichrist to become Speaker; so, McCarthy will do nothing but evil every moment he’s in power. Thus, America is now in worse danger than during the insurrection of January 6, 2021 — far worse danger — because the violent, fanatical traitors of that day now have full control of the People’s House and full control of related national-security issues. @QasimRashid
What I'm wondering is: Is McCarthy arrogant or stupid enough to really believe that after this debacle he can govern the Republican members of congress. They will vote as they please and not as he orders him to.
@Island_Martha @QasimRashid I vote stupid. The man has no principles and no ideas.
@QasimRashid
Here are some ways I see his speakership play out:
1. Democrats/Republicans request a dethronement vote, and McCarthy gets lettuced.
2. Kevin goes nuts and resigns, making him (probably) the first Speaker to voluntarily resign (getting even with Nixon).
3. The GOP finally dissolves, and the chaos unseats McCarthy.
4. Everyone is fed up with the Sedition Caucus' s*it, and the House is stalled until all Republicans resign (kinda like that situation in LA).
@south_lib @QasimRashid Boehner resigned, in just this situation, which seemed contentious at the time and now looks like a playground spat.
@kith @south_lib @QasimRashid he got tired of playing ball with tea party nuts.

@QasimRashid

It's curious that they waited until January 6th to vote him in. Deliberate or coincidence?

@QasimRashid democrats should consider whether or not they should try the opposite instead of saying "you have no choice"
Because while most marginalized may feel they have no choice.. It doesn't raise enthusiasm. And with democrats choosing the appearance of normalcy over acting on the actual facts that's really not actually much difference when it comes to things like Sars2
@QasimRashid why did democrats slow the testing down and stop collecting information in February?
Why did the Fed fudge the numbers from community transmission to community levels?
It's not because the data said so because they stopped collecting it.
@QasimRashid for us, outside US, it doesn't matter how long that took - all we see is your country got hijacked by terrorists & you all keep acting like it's no big deal. That's how most ppl outside US see things. We worry about our friends in US who have no means to leave. When they want to, for their own safety.
@QasimRashid Hey but at least we will finally reduce gas prices by investigating Hunter's laptop. 🙄
