By my math, McCarthy needs every remaining vote to become speaker, including Gaetz and Gosar who haven't voted yet.
Gosar has voted for McCarthy in the past two rounds and is likely to do so again. If Getz votes for someone else, doesn't vote or votes present, then it goes to the 15th round.
Gaetz votes present.
McCarthy has gone over to speak to Gaetz.
There are also appeals to Boebert (sitting next to Gaetz) to change her vote from present to McCarthy.
"At one point a McCarthy ally, Mike Rogers of Alabama, stormed into the huddle and seemed on the brink of violence, but he retreated to a cloakroom off the floor." -- Paul Kane, Washington Post.
Official tally: 216 votes for McCarthy.
"...a speaker has not been elected." - Clerk Cheryl Johnson.
An electronic vote now being taken on adjournment until Monday.
Trump apparently still attempting to play a role in whipping votes for McCarthy.
Something's up. Republicans changing their votes NOT to adjourn. Looks like we'll go to a 15th round.
Republicans, including a smiling McCarthy, chant: "One more time."
No adjournment.
Round 15 nominations begin.
Round 15: McCarthy (R) vs. Jeffries (D).
Biggs for the first time votes "present."
Crane (R), also for the first time ,votes present.
Gaetz votes present.
Bob Good (R-VA), for the first time, votes present.
According to Jonathan Allen of NBC News, Rogers, the incoming chair of the Armed Services committee, was furious with Gaetz for holding out for a subcommittee gavel on the panel but it's unclear whether that has been promised.
Name of Rosendale (R-MT) called twice but he doesn't respond. (He's always voted for someone else besides McCarthy in the previous 14 rounds).
McCarthy receiving applause, handshakes and hugs.
One side of the aisle giving McCarthy a standing ovation. The other side silently observes.
McCarthy 216/Jeffries 212
"The Honorable Kevin McCarthy...is duly elected speaker of the House of Representatives," announces House Clerk Cheryl Johnson.
"Speaker McCarthy’s dream job could turn into a nightmare for the American people," says Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. "To get the votes, he surrendered to demands of a fringe element of the GOP."
“No one gets promised anything,” House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has just told Dylan Wells of the Washington Post who asked about the tense encounter with Matt Gaetz.
@w7voa Imma need a bullshit report on that one, chief.
@w7voa
McCarthy lies the way other people breathe.
@w7voa ok, the first lie already, then.
@w7voa what is he actually trying to say in that sentence. Seems he’s a bit thick in the head.
@w7voa
This is why I thought it would be a brilliant move for the Democrats to support McCarthy if he rejected the crazies. He was going to win eventually. But keep Gaets and Bobert off committees.
@w7voa
well, we all knew that was coming. I am happy the 202 Dems stuck it out for Hakeem Jeffries. Proud of all of them.
@w7voa to insurrectionists who should actually be in jail for LIFE
@w7voa "Honorable" 😄😄😄
@w7voa She's going home and having a LARGE drink.

@w7voa Thank you, Steve, for your posts on this subject, and sharing it with us here on Mastodon.

What a week.

@w7voa there is nothing honourable about this clusterfuck. Nothing
@w7voa honorably when he sold our country out to the insurrectionists? No.
@w7voa Just wow, what a mess. I guess we'll find out eventually what deals he made 😫😫
@w7voa Spoiler alert: Nothing about Kevin is honorable.
@w7voa - this is not the victory he thinks it is.
@w7voa Fifteen tries for what normally is handled in one. Wow. How embarrassing. I hope this isn’t an indication for what is to come for every potential future decision made there.
@dhepworth @w7voa One of the concessions was that any one unhappy Boeber...I mean baby, could throw down their toys and force a new election, right? Expect one of the maga to do that right when a key piece needs passing.
@w7voa When do we find out what he had to give away to get elected?
@w7voa The celebrating is pretty cringe after all of this.
@w7voa queston now is what did he give up in order to get there?
@w7voa Jeffries beat him 14 times. He should have been the speaker.

@w7voa They should be hanging their heads in shame rather than applauding themselves.

The next two years are going to be rough in #America, particularly given the price that McCarthy put on the soul of the House to sell it to the Freedom Caucus.

#speaker #politics

@w7voa What a victory. International ridicule, national discord, and a legislature that cannot function...
@w7voa rosendale goes to bed McCarthy wins by default?

@w7voa

Lol Dems convinced the GOP to remain for one more round. They were going to bounce out. Kevin owes this victory tonight to Democrats.

@w7voa it feels dirty somehow! They will soon it of course. We mustn’t let them.
@w7voa ridiculous that anyone is applauding for this spineless huckster.
@w7voa Sold his butt for the job
@w7voa welp, now on to the business of swearing in the Liar from New York and dismantling democracy
@w7voa But like Ted Cruz, nobody likes him.
@w7voa building the suspense get a bit more attention for his name as well, but really who knows what all is going on in these peoples minds and bank accounts

@w7voa
Kornacki at the tote board says it's a wrap, unless a very unexpected change takes place.

But it looks from the s*#t-eating grin on McCarthy and the joyous re-uniting of Gaetz with his fangirls MTG & Boebert - they seem set to finish it off, pop the cork, get sworn in, jot some rules memos, and off for the weekend. (Maybe after the after-parties for those still in town).

Sad showing of "American governance" to be sure.

@w7voa he’s an embarrassment, I can’t believe we voted for him again

@w7voa

Men are too emotional for this job.
