Reminder that if you have a blog and also happen to be involved in web development - you are not limited to writing tech posts!

I really love when people write about music, pets, hobbies, DIY projects... Anything other than making rectangles appear on screens!

I want to do that more myself this year. Let's get personal! 💜

@mxbck My web development blog is now 90% not web development and I love it.
@mxbck Good resolution! I’ve been blogging for 20 years on January 13th, long before I studied or started a professional career in web development. Therefore my blog has almost never web dev content and I guess that’s one of the reasons why I kept doing it for all this time. But besides not limiting myself to a topic, I think the format is also very important: don’t just write long form content in your blog. Also do link posts, short posts or status posts!
@mxbck It’s so intimidating to me revealing much about my personal life for some reason
@tylersticka I know, I've had that struggle too with "year in review" posts. But it doesn't have to be anything too personal, it could also just be a cool recipe or some woodworking project or something. Need to figure out the "what" for myself too.

@tylersticka @mxbck Some really great feeds (via @gilest) that are great for the personal stuff. Inspiring.

@mxbck the post I'm most proud of is about mental health. It took me weeks to finish and I've cried at several points, but still very glad that I did. I think very few people actually read it, and even less made it to the end, but just writing it down helped me in so may ways. Now I intend to write more often about things we don’t talk enough about, both about webdev and not.

Lessons learned from burnout - Tim Severien

Burnout sucked! Let me tell you what it was like, and what I learned from it.

Tim Severien
@timsev thank you for writing that. I think it's especially hard to share stuff like this, but all the more important for others struggling with these issues. Love to see it.

@mxbck That's my approach on Birdsite/Fedi! I talk about software tech, software process, this cool food I made, 18XX board games, my guitar playing, politics, Terry Pratchett quotes etc

My favourite people to follow (blogs or microblogs) are those who are rounded, and do a variety of things. I get excited to see things I don't think about that other people are excited by.

@mxbck Thanks for this. I wonder if it’s best to stick to 2-3 categories; otherwise, how to organize/ structure the blog if the posts are all over the place? Maybe a blog of random thoughts with related tags (and two main categories, professional and personal) 🤔
