BTW, here's a little interesting fact. You may have noticed that cameras in the House the last few days are frequently focusing on groups of congresspersons and areas other than the front of the chamber. This is NOT typical. C-SPAN operates the cameras and feeds them out. Normally, House leadership controls where the cameras point, and that is virtually always to the front, avoiding any other areas or groups of persons in the chamber. But with the House leadership in limbo, C-SPAN has full control, and they're wisely making the most of it!
@lauren Ask them why they keep focusing on Burgess Owens (UT)? Although, the shot of his face when Chip Roy nominated Byron Donalds the first time was priceless.
@lauren But... the cameras belong to the House, and its ownership and control of them are what makes the floor feed a public domain product. If the House gives control of the cameras to C-SPAN, they'll have to make clear that it's still a public domain product, not a product privately owned by C-SPAN.
@KagroX @lauren
As far as I understand, under previous rules, C-Span negotiated three cameras on family swear-in day. Nobody has been sworn, and C-Span remains under this initial day exception. With this parliamentary hitch, this is unprecedented INSIGHT at a historical moment.

@lauren

Anyone here good at lip reading? The convos must be pretty interesting.

@Sfwmson I'll get HAL on it.
@lauren @Sfwmson Open the pod bay doors, Kevin.
@scotclose @Sfwmson "I'm sorry, I'm afraid I can't" ... oh never mind.
@lauren Congressional leadership mostly doesn't want to reinforce or make widely known that almost all speeches in Congress are made to an empty floor. The "Mr Smith Goes to Washington" myth of legislators being persuaded by each others' oratory is just that: a myth.
@lauren there have been some great shots! I saw one where Jim Jordan wouldn’t look at Kevin McCarthy and then just walked away from him. I know they’re both assholes, but it was very funny.
@lauren wait Congress doesn't have free press it's literally directing what the public is allowed to see? Sounds bad.
@bangskij Congress makes the rules regarding their actions that are not designated by the Constitution. They have always made the rules. Since they are the people's elected representatives, they are assumed to be representing the interests of the people.
@lauren allow me to introduce the concept of checks and balances, maybe a bit of a stretch for our geriatric nation states but I hear good things about it, maybe something to consider
@bangskij The checks and balances are there, in that the judicial branch is a check on both of the other branches. And the president has veto power over Congress according to the rules set down in the Constitution. There are all sorts of checks and balances, but access to the Chamber rests with Congress itself. If they chose, they could ban most cameras entirely, as the Supreme Court has almost always done.
@lauren nonsense, if I can't see it happening I have to take someones word for it and for me to do that I would have to be their friend. That's why all the supreme court rulings are just someone elses vivid imagination. Not some kind verifiable fact, you want me to believe they banned abortion I'm gonna need some video of it happening. These people, especially these people, should never have the opportunity to opt out of journalism. That's autocratic. No respect, 0/10 do not recommend. Fuck em.
@lauren Is that true of CNBC's cameras?
@lauren thanks for pointing out and explaining what I had noticed but not given much thought.

@lauren

If that's what got us video of AOC in patient-mom mode listening to Gosar, I'm all for it.

@lauren Another interesting fact. The Speaker of the House doesn’t need to be a member of the chamber.
@davidpaige That's why there was silly talk of electing Trump as Speaker.
@lauren Couldn’t be happier with their scanning throughout these proceedings! Love seeing all the little side bars going on. Thank you CSpan!
@kkbarn @lauren 👍Agree. CSPAN for Time Person of the year! 😀
@lauren I would love for C-Span to have this freedom to direct the House cameras in the future.
@lauren Where's a link to the livestream?
@lauren what an refreshing change of view!

Do you have a trustworthy source? Looks like
CNN and The Hill each have slightly different explanations for the policy difference, and I'd love to learn more!
Why C-SPAN’s Camera Work Is Suddenly So Interesting

For decades, the network has asked to be able to film all of what happens in the House chamber, not just the person speaking. Thanks to the Kevin McCarthy Speaker battle, it is finally happening, in all its chaotic glory.

@lauren full reality show mode! Big Brother or whatever 😎
@lauren was offered a job there in the video production side back in 1996...what a set up, even back then.
@lauren if it is truly “the peoples’ house” as the GOP loves to say these days, shouldn’t “the people” have a say in which way the cameras point from now on?!
@kcgreen The people do have a say, through their elected representatives. That's the theory, and that's how Congress has always operated.
@lauren Just soaking in the #C-span camera work. If just for that, I want this never to end. They're making an art out of Santos in the Wilderness shots. My God.
@lauren I wish I had access to video. I listen to audio because tv keeps going to talking heads before I get to hear my rep, Derek Kilmer, submit his vote for Hakeem Jeffries. I heard every vote today. I haven’t been able to find free feed for video.
@silviar Where are you?
@lauren on the Olympic peninsula. We have internet tv and I have YouTube tv, the roku channel and sling. I checked them all today. I checked online and they want a subscription application. For the small amount of time I would be following it wouldn’t be worth it.
@silviar I would assume there were live streams on YouTube proper.
@lauren And there are no rules of decorum! (so we get comments about booze, popcorn and blankets...)
@lauren There’s a little known clause in the Constitution that states that when the House can’t elect a #Speaker, C-SPAN is acting Speaker
@ElectricRedPanda Franklin wrote that clause, by the way.

@lauren

I have noticed, and it's cracking me up. Cspan out here wildin' haha.
