Over the holidays, my feeds has been filled with yearly reviews about #PKM, #TFT, and how tinkering with your tools is a distraction.

I beg to differ.

Tinkering with tools is not necessarily procrastination. It is also a way to refine your craftsmanship, helping you become better at reaching your note-taking goals.

Tinkering with tools is not necessarily procrastination

You have to practice to become better. And trying out tools – be it features you are not using in your current one or exploring something completely new – is a way to practice.

@anders for me it is also, mostly, a form of therapy 🥰
@tsvenson Ah, yes! True for me as well!
@anders You definitely have some good points too. I recently shared a video on "sophisticated procrastination" as I see the "problem"/procrastination with too much tinkering, especially in the beginning. So, as always, the truth is probably somewhere in between. I think for newbies to #PKM, it's quite advisable to spend less time with the tools themselves once you have a "good enough" workflow, and focus on the result and using the PKM rather than further tweaking.
@lph Agree! Find a system that works, use that for awhile – and then iterate on tool use/choice!

@anders @lph very recently i was showcasig my #PKM system workflow and i made a comment. I need a functional system first which i can get use to before i add bell's and wistles and decorate and add pomp and show to it.

Agreed on both counts initially get the workflow in some shape get going and later enhance as you progress.
For example #ObsidianMD my tool of choice came up with canvas plugin but i dont have a specific use case of it. instead of shoehorning i went with disabling it till i find a usecase for it. On the other hand my inflow items are so many so that a few of my friends are like we would much rather not get anything via sync then get this much. All these are good scenarios with PKM is Personal as the first keyword for a reason. To each their own.

@anant @lph Yes, good way to put it!

I think “functional” is pretty close to what I mean with “processes”. For years, I’ve had a pretty good feeling for what I need to have as a functional system. And slowly getting there as the tools mature and I get better at understanding how to use them to build what I need.

@anders Agree. I.m.o., there is the extreme attention to procrastination, assuming that the focused time, instead, is 100% effective in most cases. I don't believe that everything is so black and white.
@daviddelven Completely agree! You can’t run at max every hour you are awake.
