I'm serious about this. there are ethical issues in corporations freeloading on volunteer-run instances.
If you're here promoting the brand, seems to me you should pay your way.
@faduda @donieosullivan @adamlevinecnn Sounds sensible. It's also worth considering the burden that ~ethical norm would place on instance admins to manage accounts. It doesn't take much effort to imagine a whole "ecosystem" of third-party *aaS outfits to perform advert-related functions. And then there are the secondary effects: the impact of ad traffic in a federated context, the technical standards needed to define what is/n't an ad, etc etc.
I spent years watching #ICANN, from when it was first created to replace, basically, John Postel, through when it became a money-printing machine. Happily I moved on before it became hopelessly incestuous. The process is wretched — and the namespace it sought to govern wasn't, from the outset, *entirely* commercial. Fediverse advertising would be.
