I'll admit it. I feel lost on mastodon. My feeds are firehoses of content I don't want to plough through and I am not finding the community I know is out there. #help #mastodon #newhere

@josmac By "feeds" you mean the local and federated timelines right?

Your "home" is where any hashtags or people you follow posts end up. You need to search for and follow hashtags, and then people you find interesting from those (or people recommended to you from others)

@ericdano Thanks Eric. Your advice is the key to unlock Mastodon. We follow topics first and then discover people. Takes some work!
@josmac It does, but the work yields great benefits.

@josmac

#Fedilab by @apps offers a list of followed hashtags, management and reading becomes easier from there.

Also, you have lists. You can e.g. create one for "must read everything", comprising only a few select accounts; another one for "read daily"; and put the rest elsewhere.

List management on the Mastodon web frontend is tedious (probably also on most mobile clients), but https://acbeers.github.io/mastodonlm/ by @acbeers allows you to shift people between lists very quickly.

@PragmTeams @apps @acbeers @ericdano Thanks! I have been meaning to give lists a try.
@josmac One advice I can give is to follow hashtags of subjects you like.
@josmac Create and #follow #hashtags for subjects that interest you. They are our #Search tool.
@josmac Try offering something into the conversation. I'm learning that not everything I am excited about is picked up on here, but some stuff is. So I start pulling on the connection with folks that engage on those ideas. You have lots of interests. Post on them and see who finds you.
