"Don't Say Gay": Florida schools purge library books with LGBTQ characters

In March 2022, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) signed into law the Parental Rights in Education Act, which critics dubbed the "Don't Say Gay" bill. DeSantis angrily accused the media of promoting a "false narrative," insisting the bill does not prohibit mentioning LGBTQ people in Florida schools.

@juddlegum Yes, greatly important! A library collection is utilized by teachers in classrooms, YA students yearn for fiction that reflect themselves, picture books are foundational to building acceptance/understanding of diverse populations in US, scientific myths are taught equally to science facts. In essence, FL+ schools will create a generation of Americans ill-equipped to exist in a diverse population or deal with effects of climate change. For starters! I could go on!

These book bans look like a more "civil" book burning approach. All aimed at erasure.
We are well into the dystopian here, where we have some progressive states protecting and expanding reading and curriculum/books for LGBTQ+ folx, as well as enshrining ethnic studies, and others are erasing entire chapter of US history that are unflattering to white folks, erasing anything LGBTQ+.
I remember talking to a Florida educator a few months ago who said they could not even say the words "social justice"

@juddlegum The only thing I can say is let all the dumb, racist, self loathing people move to Florida. They eventually turn in each other. It’s all about hate, jealousy and greed. LGBTQ and normal people get out. Like the LGBTQ did “GO WEST”. Or anywhere outside that cesspool of a state.
