Never in a million years did I see pandemic safety becoming one of the most punk rock things you could do in this world, but here we are

It was true with mutual aid at the beginning (when we did our local network, it was mostly punk folks sewing masks and making hand sanitizer from distillery-donated rotgut, at least at first).

And now it's solarpunks masking up and hacking things into Corsi Rosenthal boxes

It completely makes sense-- punk and anarchism have a lot of overlap, and DIY and mutual aid culture is strong in both-- but what a sorry state of affairs that this stuff is starting to feel like a fuck you to the eugenic mainstream instead of basic soccer mom-level etiquette

@gwensnyder

I would hope pandemic safety would be a completely normal and acceptable behavior that everyone encourages it.

When did our citizens become so screwed up to say "it's a hoax."

@TopKnot @gwensnyder Honestly, I rarely worry about those who still claim it's a hoax. It's the majority, who believe in COVID but have decided there is nothing to be done and are more content to accept serious health decline (of everyone) than just wear a mask, who really disturb and concern me.

(Thinking of pandemic safety as punk mutual aid really buoys me, on what was a bleak day of my kid returning to a mostly unmasked school. Thank you. ❤️ )

@aehdeschaine @TopKnot @gwensnyder

Agreed. I look at our neighborhood school community, for example, which pulled together and did the right thing for two years… but which this year pretty much abandoned all caution, save for a handful of families. It’s like everyone has collectively chosen to forget about covid, and anything that could limit the spread of viruses, even as they complain about how often they’re getting sick now.

@TopKnot @gwensnyder @aehdeschaine

And those families? We’re all on the edge of the mainstream for one reason or another. Which makes me wonder how much vulnerability to peer pressure is at play here.

@shawrd773 @TopKnot @gwensnyder "even as they complain about how often they’re getting sick now"!! I have family (in a medical profession, no less) who still espouse the "immunity debt" malarkey. I'll be very curious to see how that plays out vis a vis their new baby.

And I have felt the peer pressure for sure, the longing to be fully social, the intense hatred of my mask, etc. But I am angrily defiant now. I thought it was spite, but after this thread, I'm going to call it punk.

@aehdeschaine @TopKnot @gwensnyder At this point, I don't distinguish between the "it's a hoax" crowd and the "there's nothing that can be done" crowd. Beliefs are irrelevant. Action or lack thereof is what matters.
@davidb @TopKnot @gwensnyder That is an excellent point. The end result is now the same. And frankly, a lot of the rhetoric is the same, and many of them don't even see it.
@gwensnyder "Somebody has to do something, and it's just incredibly pathetic that it has to be us" -- Jerry Garcia
@spore Any news on these 500 errors when uploading an image?
@gwensnyder "Responsible masking and distancing in the UK" just doesn't have the same lyrical quality to it, lol
@Bullix @gwensnyder #Ska's "pick it up pick it up pick it up" is actually talking about loose-fitting masks. It has dropped below your nose again. Your mouth AND nose should be covered. Pick it up!
@gwensnyder Same. You know who did see it, though? Queers a bit older than me. Here’s to them.
@gwensnyder Right!!? Wearing a mask in a store is so punk rock!
@gwensnyder Look, dudes, don't want your rhinoviruses, either. It's not a value judgment. Or, okay, it's not *intended* as a value judgment.
@gwensnyder it feels like pandemic accomodations/safety are less accepted now even though things have gotten worse (immune escape, case surge)
@gwensnyder

It became punk because the mainstream moved in an insane and in some sense unbelievable direction.
If you would ask in 2019 practically nobody would admit they would themselves concede like this to an often deadly or incapacitating virus. They would laugh you out of the room for suggesting most people would do just that.
@gwensnyder huh, so even as uncool as I am, I am now punk rock…
@gwensnyder though I admit the extra stuff I took on (eg continuing to do Zoom classes for students isolating) mostly wore me out
@gwensnyder the way the bare-faced stare, you'd think i wore a Mohawk and safety pins.
@gwensnyder now I want to get black ffp2 masks even more
@gwensnyder I'm punk?! I never knew! This is very exciting.
@gwensnyder Masks provide so much protection and really is a mutually beneficial thing to do when on public transport.
Now it is completely optional in Australia. I am always pleased to see even one person who cares wearing one.
@gwensnyder Imagine the response of vintage punk to today's situations.

“What I am doing now,it still is punk,” Ms. Westwood wrote in her memoir. “It’s still about shouting about injustice & making people think, even if it’s uncomfortable.
“I’ll always be punk in that sense”

It’s unfortunate Westwood couldn’t bring #punkRock #philosophy to the fashion world..she’d have lived longer

Had I been in her position, I’d have sent air-tight hi-filtration fashionable masks,HEPA helmets & HEPA necklaces down the runway🖤#punkAF #punk

Vivienne Westwood, 81, Dies; Brought Provocative Punk Style to High Fashion

The London shop she ran with Malcolm McLaren defined an era. “I don’t think punk would have happened,” Chrissie Hynde said, “without Vivienne and Malcolm.”

@gwensnyder When do we start putting pins, badges, spikes, and Misfits and Dead Kennedys patches on the cloth mask covers over the N95s? Black Flag? DRI? Melvins? Minutemen? Fugazi?

Gives a whole new irony to Suicidal Tendencies...

@arclight I've been actively considering some of these mods, lol
@gwensnyder Glad to be of service :D
