#energymastodon and other #energy people: Has a fossil-fuel-free process for producing ammonia been commercialized yet?
@katfriedrich My understanding is that it's currently not cost effective with the price of ⚡ vs ⛽. I think I have some screenshots from a lecture I saw in 2022 that you might find interesting, I'll post them tomorrow when I'm back at my laptop.
@katfriedrich The DOE recently put out a funding opp. announcement seeking decarbonized demonstration projects including commercial scale fertilizer processes -- "Applications should address the production of high volume, energy intensive, high carbon emissions chemicals including ... nitrogenous fertilizers." @katfriedrich Ah! The talk on decarbonizing fertilizer was by Dr André Cabrera Serrenho. You can actually watch it here -- https://www.c-thru.org/news/chemicals-at-the-crossroads-of-sustainability/
Chemicals: At the Crossroads of Sustainability - C-THRU

The modern chemical industry stands at the crossroads of sustainability. Do we accept business as usual, or take action to reduce emissions?

@katfriedrich
https://www.nitricity.co/ is in this space but IIRC they don't go directly to ammonia

The Haber-Bosch process can always be powered with "green" H2 from clean electricity powered electrolysis. Haber-Bosch will be tough to beat IMO.

@kirk Thanks. I am listening to a podcast episode about Nitricity on The Interchange. It would have been helpful if the host had asked them about how much water the process requires.

What I'm seeing online in this web search agrees with your comment about green hydrogen.
