One of the most satisfying aspects of contributing to OpenStreetMap for me is walking a previously unmapped hiking trail, adding it to OSM, and seeing it appear on waymarkedtrails.org (and later in various hiking-oriented Android apps).

Recently I had the chance to survey a short waymarked trail that was completely unmapped (both the physical path and the waymarking). Here are the "before and after" screenshots from hiking.waymarkedtrails.org.

#OpenStreetMap #hiking

As well as mapping the trail, I was able to add a picnic table, antenna, memorial plaque, and information board.

I also added some landcover details. This turned out to be the most time-consuming part, mainly because I had to drastically reduce a large polygon that was supposed to represent olive groves but in fact included large swathes of pine forest and bare rock - a remnant of a CORINE import I think.

Waymarked Trails - Hiking

The excursion wasn't just about surveying of course - the reason I wanted to map the trail in the first place was because it has great views of the Guadalhorce Valley and the town of Álora.

A few non-mapping-related photos on Pixelfed (partly an excuse to see what Pixelfed links look like on Mastodon):

alan.grant shared a post

A few days ago I walked the Monte Redondo trail near Álora, signposted as SL-A 031. It is a short walks that connects to the longer Monte Hacho trail, with views towards the Sierra de Las Nieves to the west, and the town and castle of Álora to the east. #hiking @mountains #alora #malaga

@alan how you finding Pixelfed? I've had an account for many years but not really used it. Thinking of resurrecting it at the moment because of more federated users
@sierranevada So far Pixelfed seems a little quiet compared to Mastodon. It is fine for posting my own photos, but I haven't discovered all that many other people to follow. I am not sure if that reflects low usage, or it is just that discovery is more difficult than on Mastodon. E.g. I don't think following hashtags works in quite the same way. But I will keep going with it for a while, maybe usage will pick up as mobile apps are rolled out.
@alan this is going to be super helpful. What app do you use? Any iOS app recommendation for #OpenStreetMap ?

@xinbenlv Recently I have been using Mapy (mapy.cz). thanks to a recommendation here on Mastodon from @gustav. I use it on Android but there is also an iOS app, and you can also view maps through a desktop browser (choose "Outdoor" under "Change Map" to highlight hiking trails).

#OpenStreetMap #hiking #mapycz

@xinbenlv I also like the OruxMaps app with OpenAndroMaps, but that is Android-only. It has a very rich feature set. I use it especially when I am surveying a trail in detail, to record both photo waypoints and the trail itself - Oruxmaps zips them all up in a handy kmz file that I can later process on the desktop for mapping.
@xinbenlv In the city and suburbs I also use Organicmaps (again both Android and iOS). Last time I checked though it didn't highlight waymarked hiking trails, so I don't use it so much in the countryside.
@alan thanks for all the mapping info. Always on the lookout for good open source mapping systems.
@alan @xinbenlv @gustav I am enjoying using Mapy. Especially like the 3D view you get on the desktop browser. Will try it out next hike we do
@sierranevada @alan @xinbenlv the offline vector maps in the mobile app is great for hiking
@alan What is the process for mapping trails? I know of many that I would like to map.

@crmccreary My basic approach is
- walk the trail, recording a track and taking photos of everything that might be useful (information boards, guideposts, junctions, condition of the path)
- pass the GPX trace and photos to desktop, open in the JOSM map editor
- map the physical paths ("ways" in OSM terminology) if they are not already there
- create a hiking route ("relation" in OSM terminology") and add the ways to the relation
- check on waymarkedtrails.org.

#OpenStreetMap #hiking

@crmccreary That explanation may or may not make sense depending on whether you have used OpenStreetMap for other things. If you haven't, I would suggest starting here and making some simple contributions initially (e.g. add a shop or another single point of interest):

@alan oh nice, the after map looks exactly like what I want. I took some photos of the guideposts on my last hike in summer and never mapped it out. Good inspiration now to see an empty "before" where I was:
. @alan ... and now the after image, finally found some time for #OpenStreetMap . Just a beginning, needs a lot more surveying and some local knowledge. Note to self: make sure photos are geotagged mext time.
@SchwarzeLocke @alan if you happen to have been recording a track separately at the time then I think there's a plugin for JOSM that will let you align the photos according the the track and a time offset.
@InsertUser I noticed a "correlate" popup in JOSM when I drag & dropped the pictures. Unfortunately I have no trace as I tried to save my phone's battery, which might have been the reason for the missing geotags.

@SchwarzeLocke oh so it's built in? I never remember what's built in and what's a plugin these days.

I have mostly used it to correlate across devices when I was doing some photomapping with a GoPro timelapse.

@InsertUser might be a plugin - I customized my JOSM over the time and accumulated a lot of plugins :D

@SchwarzeLocke @InsertUser I am also unsure at times with JOSM if I am using a plugin or not, but in this case think it is built in as described in see "Arranging photos on a GPS trace" on the Wiki.

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/JOSM/Photomapping

Where you do need a plugin, I think, is if you want to save the location to the EXIF of the photo files. But that's not needed purely for mapping.

Of course none of this helps much if you don't have a track...

@alan nice work 👍🏻💪🏻
@alan Yeah, and there are always things to contribute in the commons (trail signs, plants, walking photo imagery, etc).
@kapis Yes I keep my photos of that kind of thing in the hope that one day I will somehow have enough time to upload them to commons. May need to wait until I retire though!
