One of the most satisfying aspects of contributing to OpenStreetMap for me is walking a previously unmapped hiking trail, adding it to OSM, and seeing it appear on waymarkedtrails.org (and later in various hiking-oriented Android apps).

Recently I had the chance to survey a short waymarked trail that was completely unmapped (both the physical path and the waymarking). Here are the "before and after" screenshots from hiking.waymarkedtrails.org.

#OpenStreetMap #hiking

@alan oh nice, the after map looks exactly like what I want. I took some photos of the guideposts on my last hike in summer and never mapped it out. Good inspiration now to see an empty "before" where I was:
. @alan ... and now the after image, finally found some time for #OpenStreetMap . Just a beginning, needs a lot more surveying and some local knowledge. Note to self: make sure photos are geotagged mext time.
@SchwarzeLocke @alan if you happen to have been recording a track separately at the time then I think there's a plugin for JOSM that will let you align the photos according the the track and a time offset.
@InsertUser I noticed a "correlate" popup in JOSM when I drag & dropped the pictures. Unfortunately I have no trace as I tried to save my phone's battery, which might have been the reason for the missing geotags.

@SchwarzeLocke oh so it's built in? I never remember what's built in and what's a plugin these days.

I have mostly used it to correlate across devices when I was doing some photomapping with a GoPro timelapse.

@InsertUser might be a plugin - I customized my JOSM over the time and accumulated a lot of plugins :D

@SchwarzeLocke @InsertUser I am also unsure at times with JOSM if I am using a plugin or not, but in this case think it is built in as described in see "Arranging photos on a GPS trace" on the Wiki.

Where you do need a plugin, I think, is if you want to save the location to the EXIF of the photo files. But that's not needed purely for mapping.

Of course none of this helps much if you don't have a track...
