Framing authority George Lakoff @georgelakoff yesterday quoted the brilliant Eric Blair's @protecttruth article:

Twitter is being used by a billionaire to shift public opinion. Time to go elsewhere >>> https://deepnarrative.substack.com/p/twitter-is-being-used-by-a-billionaire

"Twitter is now a danger to American democracy. The only effective solution now is to move to new platforms. There are other social media platforms... we can build them up to support honest debate and provide some replacements to Twitter."

Twitter is being used by a billionaire to shift public opinion. Time to go elsewhere

When your opponent controls the playing field, you will always lose that fight. Let's democratize our media.

Deep Narrative

@georgelakoff @protecttruth Right now dozens of reporters are still banned from Twitter. They are examples of what happens to you when you refuse to toe the line. Musk is using the threat of the ban hammer to extort censorship. This is the authoritarian playbook. Those who stay on Twitter, just happy they are not targets, tempering their commentary so as to conform and stay safe, are not brave. They are simply hanging their brethren out to dry and empowering the despot.

Right now thousands of reporters are toeing Musk’s line voluntarily, begging to be reinstated or staying on and making sure he will never notice them, and that actually is the opposite of authoritarian, it’s enabling authoritarians. It’s cowardice, but I expect nothing from a free press that only does journalism about each other, everything else they present as a debate.

@mastodonmigration @georgelakoff @protecttruth It would be impossible to agree with this any more than I already do. We open source engineers MUST begin to take UI/UX deadly seriously. Personally, I have lived in the tech bubble for so long I remember when 1200 baud was brand new. That was my 2nd modem.

I am detached from the reality of normal tech users who find choosing an instance to be "too hard". *Does not compute!*

But if I want to contribute to #fediverse, I better damn well learn.

@notroot @mastodonmigration @georgelakoff @protecttruth This is totally off topic, but reading your post I heard the sounds of static, clanging pots, and breaking rubber bands. The joyful sound of connecting to the internet in 1992.

@daniel @mastodonmigration @georgelakoff @protecttruth That sound will forever be seared into my brainpan LOL. My 1st modem was a 300 baud with phone couplers, like in War Games. Only worked with round phones heheh.

Fun fact: you can still `telnet` into BBSes. There's a bunch still online. Here ya go: https://www.howtogeek.com/686600/remember-bbses-heres-how-you-can-visit-one-today/

Remember BBSes? Here's How You Can Visit One Today

Remember BBSes? If you're in the mood to revisit a bygone era of computer communication, you can still join one!

How-To Geek
@notroot @mastodonmigration @georgelakoff @protecttruth I connected to BBS using a Vic20 with a 300 baud. I must be getting old. :) I could also talk about Q-LINK, but then I would have to admit I used it.
@daniel @mastodonmigration @georgelakoff @protecttruth Yup. We are getting old. I used an Apple IIgs or a Kaypro 4 CP/M box, which I loved.
@notroot @mastodonmigration @georgelakoff @protecttruth I’m new here, not overly technical, and very patient. It’s still complicated compared to other social media, and widely perceived as even more complicated than it is. New users need an easy signup process where they don’t need to choose a server/instance and a straightforward smartphone app.

@mastodonmigration @georgelakoff @protecttruth

Capitalism created Musk, enabled his rise to power, covered up his mistreatment of employees at Tesla and Twitter, and allows him free reign in social media. Authoritarian rule in Apartheid South Africa taught Musk how to repress civil liberties and human rights under the banner of capitalism. The US simply gave Musk carte blanche to do whatever he wants.

@LaNegresseCanadienne @mastodonmigration @georgelakoff @protecttruth Yes. And Elon Musk confirms that you work for, or invest in, an Asperger’s/ASD spectrumee at your own peril.

@CatDragon @scenario @mastodonmigration @georgelakoff @protecttruth

Elon Musk was born and raised during Apartheid era South Africa, a notorious period of brutal state sponsored violence against South African Blacks and everyone who spoke against government suppression of civil liberties. Elon Musk inherited wealth from his family's emerald mines, government backed private firms that profited from industrial slavery. Musk took this mentality to run Tesla and Twitter in the US.

@mastodonmigration @georgelakoff @protecttruth This may not be new or original, but have people considered the possibility that the majority of journalists who remain on Twitter do so because they work for right wing organs and do not recognise extreme views as being extreme?
@mastodonmigration @protecttruth @georgelakoff Their journalism professors are still banned too. My 92,000 followers, poof! But I’ve left the Bird place and found a home in newsie. social.
@Lee_in_Iowa @mastodonmigration @protecttruth @georgelakoff greetings fellow newsie! Love this instance and will be donating come pay day.
@mastodonmigration @georgelakoff @protecttruth @dyadya_boris they are, if I am to be kind…idiots. I have far more choice words
@mastodonmigration @georgelakoff @protecttruth Very interesting read. Sadly, as a business, we have to keep on Twitter for now. It is a very hard time for independent #media, as we are increasingly pulled in all directions, but our income is decreasing by the hour. If we get lots of useful followers on here, we can justify the move and closingour #Twitter account, but currently, we don't have the following on here, and without good followings, we can't afford to move.
@MerseyReporter @mastodonmigration @georgelakoff @protecttruth There will be no migration from Twitter to here or anywhere else thus far. Tribal, Post etc. there is no comparison, easy access , posting. Twitter is full of news, millions of people, a voice for the disenfranchised, etc. it’s Apple and oranges. People are on multiple platforms now. It’s not an and or situation.

@mastodonmigration @georgelakoff @protecttruth

Interestingly the latest move on Twitter, to remove 2 factor authentication, is now making us and many other businesses to question our presence on Twitter even more. The move by Twitter it could conflict with our GDPR policy, and for many in the media, it's already conflicting with our online safety policies in general. It is also interesting to see this 'cost saving move' has happened as it could see #Twitter being hit hard by regularity bodies.

@georgelakoff More sage wisdom today from Eric Blair @protecttruth :

"Musk’s winning on Twitter. He’s influencing people... That’s shown by the Tate mess... Musk let him back on. And so, for two days when we should have been focused on #Trump’s tax returns and Ginni #Thomas transcripts, instead the whole news cycle has been about the travails of an incel misogynist influencer... Musk and Thiel are succeeding in using Twitter for rightwing goals.

Musk’s winning on Twitter. He’s influencing people. That’s shown by the Tate mess. Musk let him back on. And so, for two days when we should have been focused on #Trump’s tax returns and Ginni #Thomas transcripts, instead the whole news cycle has been about the travails of an incel misogynist influencer. I hope Tate pays consequences for his crimes and also his hateful rhetoric is banished forever. But Musk and Thiel are succeeding in using Twitter for rightwing goals. #Twitter #media #pizza

Mastodon
@mastodonmigration @georgelakoff @[email protected]'m not sure he's influencing. More like distracting. The strategy best articulated by Bannon: "flood the zone with shit."
@mickeleh @georgelakoff Exactly. Both are true. "Flooding the zone" is a tactic for influencing the media and the public. Much of the Musk/Twitter mishegoss falls into this category. For instance, while everyone is focusing on Musk/Twitter we are not talking about how Musk cashed out $23B of TSLA in 2023. Musk is an expert at distraction.
@mickeleh @mastodonmigration @georgelakoff Except the Bannon strategy lost them the House, the senate, and the White House. Then it also thwarted their “red wave”. So…how’s that working for them?
@mastodonmigration @georgelakoff @protecttruth C'mon! "Many of these narratives take the form of conspiracy theories, commonly defined as explanatory beliefs of how multiple actors meet in secret agreement in order to achieve a hidden goal that is widely considered to be unlawful or malevolent (Zonis and Joseph, 1994)." https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/1750698017701615

@mastodonmigration sure, it worked to deflect from gunny Thomas testimony reveal, but at the cost highlighting that a leader of Conservative sexual thought is a paedophile rapist.

GQP still cut off a couple fingers even if they technically still have a hand.

@mastodonmigration @georgelakoff @protecttruth he’s not, mainly because Twitter is not real life.

@mastodonmigration @georgelakoff @protecttruth

it's also time to note which Media ppl *aren't* leaving it.

@pixelpusher220 @georgelakoff @protecttruth Well, a good example of that is @taylorlorenz who was briefly famous for being banned and is now back on Twitter.
