How To Keep Your Pets Safe During Fireworks | RSPCA

Many animals find fireworks scary, but there are things you can do to help. Read our tips on how you can make fireworks less frightening for your pet.

@fringemagnet Years ago my roommate had a 120lb german shepherd/akita mix that was very sensitive to the big booms. It was always heartbreaking watching him be so scared but letting him snuggle seemed to help a lot.

Inconvenient having an animal in your lap who can put his paws on your shoulders standing up, but I would have done anything for my big baby buddy haha

@blueberrywerewolf Oh gosh it's so heartbreaking to see them that way. Our old family dog when I was younger was TERRIFIED of loud sounds, and she'd tremble and shake every time. And each animal has different ways to be comforted.

Scotty now is absolutely unphased by anything, fireworks, thunderstorms, he remains calms, which helps the cats calm down too. They get scared and go into hiding but seeing him and me not caring about it seems to relax them fast.

@fringemagnet I've definitely found they respond to how everyone else is acting. It may not be a 100% fix but a calm environment surely helps.
@fringemagnet I really want to hike into town with Moki, my pup, but the Pueblo near here will absolutely have fireworks, so, I think I’ll stay in with him this New Years. A little sad but I only have so many with him and he’s worth it.
@gobomoki Definitely the most responsible choice for your pup's safety tbh.
@fringemagnet I’d feel like a jerk leaving him behind. And he clearly doesn’t want me to go anywhere either, lol:
PS: nice Vulcan emoji ;)

@gobomoki ha, good to know my vulcan salute emoji is noticeable.

And that's a gorgeous dog! It's better to be with him and see how he reacts as every pet is different, especially if he hasn't been through something similar before.

@fringemagnet he is sort of at the end of his journey, half def. I’m more staying with him out of habit than necessity. At home he will be fine, but if we go to the near by pueblito….I don’t even know what will happen but I do know it will be too much. For him for sure and probably for me.
@gobomoki Ah yeah, I see. That's definitely the wisest choice because you never really know, so better be safe.
