As all humans know, 30 + 12 = 42

The last time this occurred was 30 December 1923 – long before #DouglasAdams was born

@QuiteFunnyGuy surely 42 is only significant because Douglas Adams said it is? If he'd chosen 43 you could calculate all sorts of dates into that too. Same goes for any number. We're just biased towards 42 now so we could actually be missing the real meaning of life number, one that wasn't in fiction. 41? 109? 3? What if Adam's was distracting us from the real number so he could keep it to himself?

Look in an ASCII table for character #42. In most code, what is that character used for?

Adams never revealed whether 42 had any meaning in context, but as a computer geek himself, it makes sense that was his intent.

The meaning of life, the universe, and everything is... whatever you want it to be.

@geobeck @QuiteFunnyGuy true but 37 could maybe work just as well. If the 42 does refer to the ASCII table character then the 42 can't be a multiple of any other numbers because you can't add symbols to make a symbol. And, what base would he have been using? It's like alchemy.

@QuiteFunnyGuy 42 is the ASCII code asterisk the wildcard signifier for filename specifiers for dir or ls and other file management command line tools. This is not a random interjection - Adams himself spoke of this when answering questions like "but, why 42?"
