Toot v17.5 has been released!

This was meant to be the translation release, but the only bigger feature that made it in was selecting language when posting, as that feature turned out to be way more complicated to get right than I expected. Still not sure it's quite right, so let me know how it works out for you!

Other than that, this release has mainly bugfixes, and an experimental ability to select text in toots after you open them.

* You can now select your language when posting, to let others filter and translate toots better! Or, if you do not select anything, the language will be set according to your keyboard language.
* You can now select text from toots after you open them.
* Adding line breaks and pasting them in image descriptions should work now.
* Fixed an animation glitch on the buttons below toots.
* A rare crash when viewing direct messages has been fixed.
* A crash when playing audio has possibly been fixed.

Also note that if you are the kind of person who doesn't change their keyboard language when writing in different languages, you can also set Toot! to auto-detect your language from the contents instead.

@tootapp 100% dumb question: Is there any way to show a unread badge on the app shortcut, or am I missing something quite essential? I can confirm I can see the application has permission for notification etc. if that would matter.

@arda This is intentionally not implemented. I find the notification badges a pretty toxic pattern that mainly drives addictive behaviour.

@tootapp Oh. That's fair I guess. I guess I'd prefer a badge on my iOS home screen with the number of alerts compared to a push notification for every event as they happen.

@tootapp is there a good way to hide the language selection if I only post in one language? Or at least move it below post visibility? I can’t find any setting about it, maybe this is a feature request?

I get wanting to make it hella obvious for newbies but it makes me scroll further to adjust the visibility, which is something I do (and I suspect others do) far more often than change the language.

@tootapp FWIW, I never switch to a different keyboard when writing English instead of my native Danish, since English characters are a subset. True for many languages.

@tootapp Dunno. Maybe I’m just an outlier. I always turn autocorrect off. Whether keyboard or auto-detect gives better signal I don’t know.

@markus For you autodetect is definitely the way to go, but I do suspect you're an outlier. But I expected outliers which is why I added the autodetection as well.

I really like your App :) The translation and the language settings are great.

I have a problem, I can’t see my followers or the people I follow in the Toot app. I use GTS (gotosocial) as Server. In the App Metatext it works 🤔 I click in the app on my own account on Follower.

@flash Toot! is pretty strict about sticking to the Mastodon API, so there might be some small incompatibility there that breaks it. At some point I need to implement a way to inspect API errors better...

@tootapp Good to know the language selection is supported now. It is useful to global users. The automatic selection is better than expectation. What a great feature. 

Btw, expect the translation can be supported in the future. It will be useful for a non native speaker. A trans language stand alone with UI will be better!
