Tiny Mastodon Newbie Tip 🐘✨:

If you find not many people Boost (repost) your toots (posts) with photos or memes, it could be because you did not use Alt-text 👁‍🗨

Adding Alt-text to your images will not only make them more accessible, it will also increase the chances that others Boost your toots!

HOW TO ❓

Tiny Mastodon Tip for Newcomers 🐘✨: I’ve had many people asking me recently about Alt-text, so here what it is and how to use this feature: Alt-text is used to add a text description to an image you upload so that people who use a screen reader can know what your image is. HOW TO❓ 1. On desktop, when writing a toot (post), you can add an image by clicking on the paperclip icon on the bottom menu on the left. 2. Once your image is uploaded, click on “! No description added” over you image. 3. You will then see a popup allowing you to add a text description of your image. Try to be as clear as possible in your description. It’s okay if it’s short. 4. Click “Apply” and that’s it! You can then publish your toot normally. 5. You can follow @[email protected] to remind you to add alt-text in case you forget 👍✨ #TinyMastodonTip

I absolutely second that. I don't boost images without #AltText
@Em0nM4stodon Please look at this image and tell me whether at least sometimes we don’t need alt-text

@Hovedorganet
You always should, because not everybody can see (or see well), and some people may even choose to view Mastodon only with text (there's some neat command line programs, for example). A screen reader can't necessarily tell what the original photo says, but the alt text makes it clear.

Not everyone uses the app you're using, so that's either a bug or a setting you can probably change.

Screenshot of a quote posted on social media:
"In American mythology, people are rich because of 'hard work'. Yet nobody can explain why those who do all the actual labor have no money." -- Steven Salaita

This quote is repeated in a citation below the first post. There is also alt text with the same words, in a translucent pop-up partially covering the lower part of the post.

So, what do you do when you see a good post on here with an image that doesn't have a description/alt text? #accessibility #a11y #AltText #ImageDescription #mastodon #fediverse #SocialMedia #netiquette [ ] Repost as is [ ] Repost with description [ ] Repost and reply with description [ ] Move on

@Em :official_verified: Makes me wonder if my own image posts are hardly boosted/reposted/renoted/repeated because they're too niche and special interest or because they're too long due to the long, detailed image description in the post itself in addition to the not exactly short short description in the alt-text.

I guess Mastodon users in general don't have a problem with boosting posts with alt-texts that fill the 1,500-character alt-text limit up to the last character, regardless of how accessible they actually are. But they generally won't boost anything that exceeds the default 500-character post limit by another tens of thousands of characters.
