I love atheists because they choose to be good not out of fear of hell but because it’s the right thing to do.
@godpod We do it for Santa
@mayaisloading @godpod
And the environment. Bringing me coal just contributes to atmospheric CO2.
@godpod Or we're just not naturally assholes? I honestly don't remember ever choosing to be good. It just seems to be the way I generally am (though obviously I've had my asshole moments via being oblivious to others' perspective and values).
@seldoncrisis @godpod Somehow, this sounds right to me too.
@seldoncrisis @godpod I think you're right that humans generally ARE inherently "good," meaning we treat others well. I think that this is the result of evolution – those "good" traits evolved as traits necessary for forming large social groups. Many mammals exhibit "good" social traits that are shared by humans, so I suspect many of our moral attitudes actually have their roots in pre-human history.
@johngove @godpod We have to be overwhelmingly decent folks considering how many of us there are. If only 1% of human beings are assholes that's a terrifyingly large number of horrible people we have to deal with.

@godpod

Awwwww!

Agnostic here

Love you, too

@godpod To quote Steven Weinberg - "With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion."
@krakalak @godpod No, it takes ideology. Plenty of ideological arguments for doing bad things that don't depend on religion.
@godpod A much more honest approach to empathy.
@godpod
This is *exactly* how us atheists act. <snort>
@godpod A little compassion and empathy is not hard.
@godpod once dated a Christian girl that was shocked by how moral I was, her words, and that I wasn't religious. She seriously didn't understand how I wasn't going around stealing and murdering people. I had to explain to her "BECAUSE IT'S WRONG".
@godpod Taoists do it because it is in harmony with the Tao
@godpod Also because we get cookies.
@godpod non atheists do that too! But I get your point! 😘
Ah, but they’re so preachy.

@godpod I love the A-Religionists because they don't even think about whether you exist or not.

They just get on with their lives trying to be most excellent and not be a dick.

@sbaker9014 @godpod probably uses laughing emojis far too much and calls whack job conspiracy theories “epic”

@godpod

They don't choose anymore than anyone else does God. Don't life experiences lead them in that direction?

@godpod We have compassion, empathy and free mind so to know what's good what's bad is easy. The question is why others need religions and ideologies to find out directions (most of them wrong anyway).
@godpod
yeah,. but some of us are still assholes:)
@godpod More than that. You should know. We atheists choose to do good because it is an evolutionary trait: our moral compass.
@godpod many of them are complete assholes. 🤷🏼‍♀️
@godpod
Exactly! Being good because it's right- NOT because you will get a reward or punishment.
@godpod I do it because I fear the one true Space Cat God Splort. I do not wish to spend eternity in the Dirty Litterbox for disbelieving in his pawsitively purrfect presence despite no evidence he exists! May his whiskers be forever long. Ameown.
@godpod When I do nice stuff and people tell me I’m earning my place in Heaven they’re super confused when I say I don’t believe in it. A lot of people don’t understand being a good human to just be a good human.

@deirdrestatham @godpod

What it really means is they *aren't* good people and will lie cheat and steal unless coerced with a reward.

@godpod no such perfect religions stories.

@godpod

My friend @Bluegal says that atheists get into heaven first.

@godpod

Yeah sorry, I don't need your approval. :)

@godpod Much better people than 95% of the Republican Jesus “christians” I know. #FakeChristians
