If I were still teaching mathematics, I'd love to use this fun example as a teachable moment to encourage students to explain why ChatGPT got it wrong.

Why it got it wrong... I'd be careful about that one.
It got it wrong because it doesn't actually know how math works. It's a language model, it's not *supposed* to know maths, and it doesn't actually think or reason.
Actually explaining how it works would be great, though, because both snarky critical posts and techbros trying to hype it up often spread a bunch of misinformation about it, so somebody has to do it.
