When Trump called COVID "the Chinese virus," it led to a rise in anti-Asian attacks.

This racist and ineffective policy from the Biden White House will have the same devastating effect. Shame on you!

Requiring negative tests for flights from a single country is ineffective because the US is already letting it rip and generating variants, and also because people travel everywhere, so variants that may become dominant in China will still reach the US via other countries.

#StopAsianHate #COVID #COVID19 #PublicHealth

The Biden White House requiring negative tests for only China is a move that puts politics over public health, and increases the likelihood of xenophobia and attacks on Asian people in the US.

#StopAsianHate #COVID #COVID19 #PublicHealth

If the US is really worried about variants and the spread of COVID through travel, it should require negative tests for all travelers, no matter where they come from, and require masks. Targeting single countries with bans and requirements is ineffective and racist.

@luckytran
Absolutely. And it's not like the US even gives a shit about Covid. Yes, what is coming out of China is scary, especially the sheer numbers of people coming from China that are positive. But what does it even matter when there are absolutely no mitigations in place anywhere else in the US? The hypocrisy and gaslighting is staggering.
@Ekinnajay @luckytran Yep. It’s like how our city issues travel advisories and recommends testing/isolation on return for states with high transmission even when our own rates are as high or higher and they happily refuse to implement any community-level mitigations whatsoever.

@luckytran

I've found studies indicating that Black People, Native Americans, and LatinX People are more accepting of P & NP interventions than are us whites. I keep throwing that info at bigots.

@luckytran Agreed, in fact every country should do as you suggest. Masks should be mandatory on all flights, buses and trains worldwide. RATs used on arrival in another country and a negative test within 24 hours pre flight. We could reduce covid cases, flu cases and slow newer variants being created
@JessicaPerthWA @luckytran I agree, masks should be mandatory. Some acquaintances got sick and tested positive on a cruise, flew home but were delayed, and were very sick when they arrived home. Masks need to be mandatory.
@luckytran @donmelton I hope these spread. They should have never dropped them. Politics
@luckytran on first sight I thought this was about the Supreme Court ruling keeping asylum seekers out--applies there, too. #stopasianhate
@luckytran NPR had good reporting. China isn't publishing genetic data so testing the population coming in from China helps us to see what new variants are emerging over there. Meanwhile, China requires two negative tests to enter so the double standard is literally on China's part.
@luckytran as flight crew, I can’t go back to being a mask enforcer. I’ve never been threatened as much in my professional career as I was during that period.

@luckytran

Sounds like many people are trying to leave China if they can, it's such a disaster there.

@luckytran
Two reports suggest China has estimated 200 million people caught covid in december
@luckytran True. They're having a massive uncontrollable surge in Covid and also decided to let people travel. (Wth?) We MUST require testing from China. Seems like China wants the US to have problems, including hate towards Asians. It's not like they care about the people.
@MarianneRyan @luckytran what is the point of testing people traveling from China when we don’t bother with anyone else. The USA has done a terrible job protecting Americans and you wanna talk about other countries dropping the ball?! When it comes to covid death rates we’re number one!
@Tanya_everywhere @luckytran we are not alone in these restrictions. We lack info from China, we don't know what variants they have. The US is doing a great job protecting Americans, short of forcing vaccines on the ignorant. We are on top of our variants, monitoring wastewater, have current boosters...

@luckytran

I understand your comments on this being ineffective because it does not address COVID coming in from elsewhere but I really disagree that this is somehow anti-Asian. It's testing anyone coming in from one country that has a surge ,, They could be Polish, American, Angolan or anything else .. if they fly in from there. Now you say that is ineffective OK but to compare it to what Trump said is way over the top.

@luckytran
You want to stop Asian hate?

Stop voting for Republicans after they stirred up all that Asian hate that led to little Asian grandpas getting beaten to death in the streets.

That wasn't directed at you, but there are a lot of our fellow Asian-Americans who remained Republican even after the crap that Trump pulled, and I cannot for the life of me understand that.

@luckytran
It’s just the same story over and over. When will we learn that once a virus is established in one place (wherever that might be) it’s already everywhere? Only sane public health measures do anything at that point (universal access to testing, required masking inside, air circulation requirements, paid sick leave, etc).

We could try being proactive for once, but apparently that’s too much to ask

It’s a virus, not a people. And it’s most likely already here

@luckytran Acusing countries of racism because they want to slow down the spread so they can prepare for the next wave while not unnecessarily blocking everyone is just unnecessary and makes your point very weak while half of the passengers on a flight from China have covid https://news.sky.com/story/covid-patients-no-longer-have-to-quarantine-in-hong-kong-as-restrictions-are-lifted-12775498

We need intelligent solutions to save lives, not shotgun solutions and blanket solutions, one size doesn't fit all.

Half of passengers on China flight to Italy have COVID - as US becomes fifth country to tighten restrictions on Chinese travellers
