Hypocritical given the US is letting COVID rip, and has likely been responsible for many variants. Unless you are requiring negative tests for all passengers no matter where they fly from, not sure that this does anything except encourage more xenophobia against Asian people.

#COVID #COVID19 #China #StopAsianHate

@luckytran Absolutely!! Thanks for calling this out.
@luckytran We should require negative COVID tests FOR ALL TRAVELERS.
@giraffeslava @luckytran If a negative test were required for travel, it would largely impact the “get back to normal” contingent and have far-reaching health benefits globally.
@luckytran
It sure smells just a bit racist. Probably because it is 🤔
@luckytran how about some analysis of where the most variants have come from. The USA has been responsible for the spread of this disease from day one in the name of 'freedumb', their ridiculous take on 'free speech' has allowed the growth of a cult of anti-vaccination now causing the increase of other diseases once on the way out and an the time trying to blame it on China as yet another way to try and prevent the USAs economy being over taken.
@luckytran European countries have announced similar measures sounds like a coordinated effort , China is the hotspot right now
@luckytran
US has no central or transparent testing or reporting either. Projecting from incomplete TX (always understated), CA, and MN reports; US had 1.1 million cases during xmas week.
This is all economic propaganda on US' part. US over-wealthy had feelings hurt.
NB: for US cits to enter Japan and a couple other countries, if not have 3 x vaxxes, must have negative test w/in 72 hours.
@Skirnir @luckytran Pfft. The US plausibly has over half a million new infections per _day_.

@luckytran

This was the issue from the beginning, only incoming from China.

@luckytran As a Chinese, I disagree. If you look at recent reports of positivity rates of flights from China (some 50% of a flight is positive), you'll know it's unlike other countries, unlike other times. China recently did a sudden-reopening, and a huge amount of people got infected. The situation is unlike eg a month ago.
@easoncxz @luckytran Yikes. This is news to me - thank you for sharing it. Still, it's way hypocritical, given how much immunocompromised (like me) are hiding due to let-it-ripism in the US.
@easoncxz @luckytran I definitely got the sense that China just uncorked the bottle and is in the midst of a crushing wave.

@luckytran I am not so sure about that. Some European countries have started that as well.

There is a massive outburst of cases in China at the moment. The higher the number of cases the higher the chance of mutations and new variants.

The only problem with it is that they will eventually find the way back to us, but somewhat later.

@iar81b @luckytran yes and thank you for the uncontrolled number of variants that have spread from the USA to the rest of the world over the last few years.
@luckytran Yup. Said something very similar to this earlier today when I saw this https://climatejustice.rocks/@dlature/109591631668541604

Be careful letting "them" in, but backing away from taking much of any precaution amongst us: "Chinese tourists escape ‘zero covid’ but face new restrictions abroad" https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/12/28/china-reopening-travel-japan-restrictions/

@luckytran I
Absolutely true. They are are such hypocrites. China isn't doing anything the rest of the world hasn't done already.
@luckytran yeah, gonna disagree. More like quid pro quo. China still requires negative tests from travelers trying to enter China from the US. Don’t really think racism has anything to do with it.
@luckytran It's just normal people paying for a pissing match between Winnie the Pooh and Corn Pop

@luckytran

WTF? Not everything is about race. China has seen spikes in infections and has been responding. How would it not be reasonable to inspect travelers who passed through China? Again it's travelers, not Asians. This isn't WWII Japanese internment camps. Stop spreading mislabeled hate.

@quest @luckytran Covid is everywhere. Why aren't we testing inbound travelers from Canada or Europe? Why are we doing nothing to slow transmission inside the US?
@luckytran and variants aren’t just evolving in China.😣
@luckytran I would not be surprised if the next episode of the War Between the States occurs when NY and California ban entry to residents of Texas and Florida without vaccination proof or a negative Covid test...

@luckytran

No one should be flying anywhere anyway.

Not only are we still in a pandemic, we're also in a climate crisis.
Ppl flying all over the world makes both worse.

@luckytran
A Democratic president succeeding where Trump did not: normalizing not just mass death, but racism against Asians.
