The longer it takes to bring Trump to justice, the more it empowers other sociopaths in power to believe they will not face consequences for their acts of cruelty and violence.
@StevenBeschloss And lying, remember when that was considered a bad thing to do?
@ncw413 @StevenBeschloss No. Getting caught lying was the bad thing. These days, not so much.
@StevenBeschloss Got to treat these people like our kids. If no substantial consequences, kids will continue to push the limit.
@normalguy @StevenBeschloss The problem is, these darn "kids" have managed to install their best buddies as babysitters.
@StevenBeschloss History says nothing will happen. We need to accept that as a given and adjust the expectation and messaging. Even if the legal system fails he can face consequences. We need realistic goals.
@statmonkey @StevenBeschloss It is so very sad that a "realistic" goal in the US does not include the arrest and trial of a powerful political figure who tried to overturn a legitimate election and committed obstruction in the process. Our country is circling the drain.
@TomGregory @StevenBeschloss Sad fact. It's been this way forever. Source: Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky
@StevenBeschloss Yep. They need to get this done sooner than later. I get the whole - this needs to be successful thing. But get him on something solid now like the documents - they have at least obstruction on that hands down. Then they can go after him for 1/6 (& his litany of other crimes!!) when they feel ready. But it needs to be shown that he is NOT above the law (probably should be shown that neither are members of #scotus but I digress) so the others might think twice b4 they act!
@StevenBeschloss Every day that the DOJ has allowed to pass without arresting Donald Trump is another day he and his toxic cult have been free to sew the seeds of hate, anger, distrust, and violence.
All presidential candidates should be made to undergo thorough psychological screening before being allowed anywhere near the White House.
@mags not popular, but we also need a maximum age, not just for the presidency, but also other offices
@mags I agree, but who gets to do the evaluation? I mean, Trump's two doctors shredded all of their integrity to lie for him. Who chooses the doctors?
There needs to be a team of doctors.
@StevenBeschloss I think it is still a toss up if Trump will be brought to Justice. Garland has his wet finger stuck up in the political wind. Justice and Democracy be damned. Maybe Biden is protecting his son over our Democracy? I hope not but something doesn't smell right to me.
@StevenBeschloss this is sure to get the ball rolling

@StevenBeschloss

Unfortunately, very true and already visible (Texas governor) and others.

@StevenBeschloss While I agree Trump needs to be brought to justice, letting all the other goons who enable fascism just allows fascism to fester.

@StevenBeschloss THIS! 100%

At the very least, we should be seeing some indictments of lower-echelon players like Eastman or Biggs or Perry.

I feel like the DOJ is dragging it's feet on purpose until they can just kill the entire thing.

@StevenBeschloss I'm from the UK and I need Trump to face consequences too.

However, Steve, do you really see him facing any form of censure? Maybe it will be possible to stop him from running for public office but's that it, IMHO.

The political blow back from some of the cruelest and nastiest people on the planet would be too much for not only Dems to stand but your country too.

No, this guy will come out of this, at best, with his pride a bit dented.

@StevenBeschloss The even bigger & more important essential institution, the credibility of which is endangered by the incomprehensible delay of accountability is the people's #RuleOfLaw!
A fatal process surely warmly welcomed by Trump.

#DefendDemocracy #JusticeMatters #AccountabilityNow #AccountabilityMatters #Insurrection #Overthrow #Jan6

@StevenBeschloss Bringing him to Justice is not something that can be accomplished quickly. DOJ must cross every T and dot every I, before even indicting a former President. A single failed prosecution will strengthen Trumpโ€™s argument of a witch-hunt.
@StevenBeschloss unfortunately that jackass ain't going to jail, and this is only the beginning!
@StevenBeschloss
This could be the first death penalty ON THE BOOKS for TREASON of someone who was to be protecting those in the country and not acting in any dispecible manner to harm others thru himself as has occurred and continues thru pursuit by anger and disregard of others...
@StevenBeschloss true and itโ€™s getting worse. Sad sad ๐Ÿ˜”
@StevenBeschloss and Garland has no understanding of the urgency. He must be replaced by someone that will het the job done.

@StevenBeschloss exactly.

How many people do you think Elon can get to storm the capitol?

I have a feeling heโ€™s thought about it.

@StevenBeschloss Unfortunately Trump believes in one law that being Trumps law and a different law for everyone else. The man believes he is above the law and untouchable. Itโ€™s a very sad indictment on the American justice system.
@StevenBeschloss I've been screaming this for ever
@StevenBeschloss
Why are the wheels of justice turning so slowly in this situation?
@StevenBeschloss I fail to understand why he and his entire family were not behind bars days after losing the election. American 'justice' has always been a mystery to me. It's very peculiar....
@StevenBeschloss

If Trump and his close lackeys aren't indicted, the United States will set a dangerous precedent by creating an unequal system of justice. Many people are facing unfair convictions and incarcerations for minor infractions in an already overloaded legal system while the top wealthy and influential are untouched by the law. Why is this? Counsel Jack Smith and AG Merrick Garland must make a decision soon. For the sake of our country's future, I hope they make the right decision.
@StevenBeschloss Will he ever be taken to justice? It didn't work in the past... The US-justice system is made to lock away poor people.
@StevenBeschloss I think that's right, though I think making an effective, foolproof case will take time.

@StevenBeschloss

Indeed.

Trump didn't invent Trumpism. He gave it a new name. Trumpism will endure under another name and in a new form.
