80% of cyclists (aka people who ride bikes) in #Copenhagen ride their bikes all winter. This stat has been around for quite a while, originally via @Colvilleandersen, so I’d be interested in knowing what the current numbers are. Inspiring cities like this have had an effect over the years β€” winter biking has become more common in more cities every year, usually fuelled by improvements to infrastructure & maintenance.

@BrentToderian @Colvilleandersen I'm in upstate NY for a visit and there are plenty of bikers out and about despite NO bike infrastructure. Weather is not the blocker. Everyone I've seen is riding on the sidewalk
@BrentToderian @Colvilleandersen one tiny upside of having essentially no bike lanes and having to bike in the road is that you know the city will be clearing the path.
@BrentToderian @Colvilleandersen Afraid I am typically #dutch but why should you stop riding your bike? We use our bikes every day of the year #holland #nederland #bike #fiets
@BrentToderian @Colvilleandersen I used to cycle to my job about 5 km outside Edinburgh in the countryside. My colleagues thought I was mad for cycling in the snow, but it was so enjoyable and beautiful. I was never late for work either, unlike my car-bound colleagues who got stuck in snow-induced gridlock
@BrentToderian @Colvilleandersen I dislike that picture because no one has figured out the glory of baseball caps. Stick one under your helmet and it pretty much keeps the snow and rain out of your eyes while biking. No need for hunching your face down.
Why winter is a poor argument against bike lanes

It’s the early hours of a freezing morning, and Harri Vaarala, a Finnish traffic engineer, is getting ready to go to work. His job in the northern Finland city of Oulu is a good 27km (16.8 miles) away

@BrentToderian @Colvilleandersen I cycled all winter when I was in Milwaukee, it was way more reliable than bus or car.
@BrentToderian @Colvilleandersen I love biking through winter, but what usually stops me is frozen brakes when temperature is below 10F. I have not found a good solution! Happy to learn if people have ideas!
@BrentToderian @Colvilleandersen For real. Winter cycling in Minneapolis is absolutely a thing. And I mean actual commuting, daily, on snow.

@BrentToderian
Honestly, I only ride in the winter when the roads and bike paths are clear. Plowing bicycle infrastructure soon after it snows would go a long way to supporting winter biking.
