Over the last week a lot of people have asked “Why Subscriptions?” And “Why not make all existing features free and charge only for new features?” Here are the answers:

1. Why Subscriptions:
Few people buy paid upfront apps, even fewer bought them this year. For paid upfront apps, the future isn’t very bright and the present is more grim than it was 2-3 years ago.

To have any shot at doing this sustainably, we *need* to offer subscriptions.

2. Why not make all existing features free and charge only for new features:

Wish it was possible, but I can’t provide something for free when it’s costing me money every month + I need to offer a compelling product to first time users who are seeing it as a subscription based product, so I also need to pick which features are something people would want to pay for.

@Viditb Now I’m confused again: I thought existing features are free now and (only) the new features are charged (via a subscription)?
