I shared this podcast with a friend on here and it sparked some great conversation (and excellent sleep) so I thought I'd mention it as a resource for the #JoinIn community too: https://www.nothingmuchhappens.com/stories. It's just really gentle storytelling with lots of sensory details and very little plot, kind of like a handrail for your mind so it doesn't go spinning off while you're trying to fall asleep. (I'm not affiliated.) May it bring you restorative #sleep and peaceful dreams.
Nothing Much Happens Podcast — Nothing Much Happens

Bedtime stories are like a soft nest for the mind. They are a place for it to rest so that it doesn't wander away and get into trouble, and in the world we're living in now it is so easy for it to find trouble.

Nothing Much Happens
@anniebeeknits “like a handrail for your mind” is a perfect simile
@Kayray It's just enough, right? It's not train tracks that totally confine you to one path, but it's enough to let you feel steady and guided.

@anniebeeknits yes! My brain needs something to chew on but it can’t be too exciting or too boring, and I need to LOVE the narrator’s voice and style. My usual go-to is https://historyofenglishpodcast.com/ but it doesn’t work on a bad insomnia night because it’s too interesting. That podcast is often the soundtrack of my life both day and night.

@Kayray BAHAHAHAHAHA Are you me? Because that is my other go-to, but then it gets too darned interesting and then I'm awake 3 hours later thinking about how head = chapel = cloak = whatever else. OMG. (Another truly excellent podcast, though.)

@anniebeeknits OMG I thought I was Kevin’s Biggest Fan but maybe we’ll need to fight for the title! 🤣 I only do two Patreons — just Kevin and my Mastodon server.

I’m know some German so I get all excited when I see a link to OE. Like in an ep I listened to recently, Kevin said that “starve” (stervan) just meant “to die” in OE. Guess what “to die” is in German? STERBEN! I hear that, my brain snaps awake 🤣

@Kayray I *AM* the kid who asked for (and received) an etymological dictionary for her 13th birthday... and still has it nearly 30 years later, and I did a few linguistics courses for my anthropology degree. His podcast is very on brand for me! 🤓 😂 And yes, I know a little bit of German and Latin, as well as (more) French and Spanish, so my brain absolutely delights in making those connections.
@anniebeeknits I took Latin in college too!
@Kayray I never had the opportunity, but my grandfather was a seminarian and my father was a botanist so something sort of trickled through from them! A smattering of Greek, too.
@anniebeeknits Thank you for posting this. I tried it and it really worked for me. I’ll have to check out the History of English, too - it sounds fascinating!
@AlpacaFiberLover Oh, I'm so glad to hear this! ✨
