Oooh, this one turned out nice!

#solargraphy image:
This is the course of the sun over the last 6 months in Lilienthal, close to Bremen, Germany. The picture was taken with a can (with a tiny hole) and photo paper.

@moritz was the photopaper in the can?
@eliza_coli yes! This is how it works: https://www.instructables.com/Solargraphy/ (I use screw top cans though for reusability..)
Solargraphy

Solargraphy: Solargraphy is the art of long exposure photography that captures of the image of the sun moving across the sky.  These exposures can last days, months, even years. This Instructable will show you one design for solargraphy pinhole cameras. &nb…

@moritz That's amazing - I got given socks in a can that would be perfect for this. Thank you so much!

@moritz @eliza_coli Very nice, Moritz! From solstice to solstice? 😉 Also cool to see they're giving Justin Quinell credit for the approach — here's also an interesting talk by him at Hong Kong Photo Festival 2017:

@toxi @eliza_coli yes, I repeat every six months for a clean shot 😀 and thanks for the link!
@moritz @eliza_coli @toxi Many pioneers indeed. First encountered it through the work of Finnish artist Tarja Trygg: http://www.solargraphy.com

@moritz Like the pages of a book. Beautiful.
@moritz Really interesting! A science project I'd like to do with my son.
@watty62 Have you seen the Pavlovka Pinhole Photography Festival exhibition at Aberdeen Art Gallery? Some amazing examples of solar photography.
@postabdn hi. Yes thanks. I was there two days ago. (In fact I posted a monochrome pic taken in the main hall on here). I really liked the exhibition. Something else I'd like to get into in my ever-expanding list of interests .....
@watty62 So you did. It’s was a fantastic photo too!
@postabdn thank you. A quick mobile phone shot.
@moritz I love this! wonderful how it captures both the daily and annual change in sun’s angle (if I understand correctly the light arcs)
@moritz does it need a specific type of photo paper for such a long exposure?
@scottmclaughlin I use black and white paper, Ilford Multigrade MGRC. Important to note that this is not film, but paper you’d use for developing pics.
@moritz ah gotcha, thanks! I wouldn’t have guessed that
@moritz have you tried colour paper? (Just curious if that’s something to be avoided)
@scottmclaughlin I can’t remember the reason but I think I read a recommendation for using black and white.
@moritz very nice!
Very much appreciate you looking at visualisation in, quite literally, a broader perspective :-)
@moritz These are always so cool. Does that dark band in the middle represent an entire week or two without sun? very cool
@cordlessmodem Yes, exactly! Must have been overcast the whole time…
@moritz Wowza this is beautiful! Bet it'd look pretty amazing printed up. How did you know how much to expose?
@0xbenj the only factor is the size of the hole. Normal sized sewing pin did it for me.
@moritz Ah cool. And the amount of time exposed? You just estimated?
@0xbenj Amount of time is simply 6 months, but distributed across the image :) (The sun always just shines light on a tiny, unique fraction of the image at a given point in time.)
@moritz Ah I see, makes sense ☺️ Thanks!
@moritz Please don’t install in public places without labelling. These have been mistaken for IEDs and caused serious disruptions.
@Populational good point, yes. I do it on my own property.
@moritz This is a project I've wanted to do for a long time (and which taes a long time). Very cool!
