Given that we are rapidly trying to build community hereโ€ฆ

Can I ask you to do two key things:

1) Reshare other peopleโ€™s posts - so your timeline is rich with other peopleโ€™s posts for anyone browsing your content to discover.

2) Follow, follow, follow. That goes for following those posting good stuff - and also following those that follow you (as much as practically possible/sensible).

If you do these things, youโ€™ll help us all network up at fast pace - and we all grow our voices & reach. โœŒ๏ธ

@mikegalsworthy Slight subtoot here - but everyone please at least put a brief bio in before you start following so people can see who you are and decide to follow back!
@LawtonTri Seconded. But I cannot abide the word โ€œtootโ€!
@LawtonTri @mikegalsworthy Iโ€™m getting used to it and itโ€™s 20% less typing ๐Ÿ˜€
@mikegalsworthy I share the feeling for the moment (I'm trying to get used to it), but honestly can't remember what I thought about "tweet" when I started in the Other Place.
@LawtonTri @mikegalsworthy the other place ๐Ÿ˜‰ sort of like in Harry Potter and he who must not be named!
Not sure which of the 2 is the most destructive of this universe
@mikegalsworthy @LawtonTri The story behind it is funny - When Mastodon started up, a prominent YouTuber offered Eugen Rochko, Mastodonโ€™s creator financial backing for the project, if publishing a message was called a โ€œtoot. Eugen didnโ€™t know then that โ€œTootโ€ is American slang for a fart ๐Ÿ˜‚

@LawtonTri @mikegalsworthy

I always used โ€œpostโ€ there. I plan always to use โ€œpostโ€ here

@mikegalsworthy @LawtonTri Subtoot is lovely though - I haven't heard that since I was in my last underwater traffic jam.
@mikegalsworthy @LawtonTri I guess if it's a mean it could be a bleat.....

@LawtonTri @mikegalsworthy
I appreciate the term "toot" ๐Ÿ˜

I dabble in #photography #quilting #rockhounding and #adhd topics.

I do what I can to re-toot/reblog/share others' toots. Here's a quilt design I'm working on. I'm a retired Nintendo gaming veteran so I get a kick from all the old nostalgia.

@LawtonTri @mikegalsworthy I would if it would let me! Canโ€™t edit my profile.
@LawtonTri @mikegalsworthy @juiceian what app are you using? You might give it a try in the browser.

@juiceian @LawtonTri @mikegalsworthy

Have you managed to navigate to where it says โ€œEdit profileโ€ and the button is not working?

Or are you still trying to find your way to the button?

@Gordon_DHG @LawtonTri @mikegalsworthy The button doesnโ€™t seem to work. Keeps dropping me out of the app. I have used it once so not sure whatโ€™s wrong.

@juiceian @LawtonTri @mikegalsworthy

My advice is to reboot the phone, then go to Mastodon as the first thing after the restart

And try the Edit Profile button again

If it still doesn't work then, then uninstall the app & re-install it

@LawtonTri @mikegalsworthy

Don't people just click on the name and read the bio? That's what I do. TBH those intro toots are jumping the shark right quick.

@LawtonTri @mikegalsworthy Yes, and a bio is especially important on Masto because when you are reviewing a profile with a view to following or following back there may not be any posts from that person available on your instance yet. Often the bio is the only thing you have to go on

@mikegalsworthy Yes definitely, and well done for putting in so much work on this.

People new to this might not realise that likes/favourites work like a "thank you" but do nothing to make the post more visible. There is no algorithm. Use the button that looks like retweet, which is called either "boost" or "reblog" depending on which app you're using.

@tomw Tom!! Great to see you here! Followed. ๐Ÿ‘

@mikegalsworthy Thanks! I followed you a few days ago by using Debirdify to import people I follow from Twitter (it looks for people you follow on Twitter who list a Mastodon profile in their Twitter bio):
https://pruvisto.org/debirdify/

Worth a try if you haven't seen it already.

Debirdify

This is a web app that helps you find out which of the people you follow on Twitter are on Mastodon/in the Fediverse already and follow all of them easily.

@tomw @mikegalsworthy ok, but what does the 'share' icon do then?
@SylviaStarship @mikegalsworthy Not sure which app you're using but looks like 'boost' is the one you're looking for. I imagine 'share' is probably to share the link to the post to somewhere else.
@tomw @SylviaStarship Yup - exactly that. It means share to an external place (email, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, etcโ€ฆ)
@tomw @mikegalsworthy I did *not* know that. Thanks for explaining!
@tomw @mikegalsworthy
Useful advice! Getting the hang of mastodon after a week, and only yesterday realised how โ€˜favouritesโ€™ work. In iOS browsers favourites are like bookmarks, so hadnโ€™t been using them.
Just learning about Mastodon lists today. Yay!
@tomw @mikegalsworthy hi both, thanks for the pointers for us green horns ๐Ÿ˜Š
@mikegalsworthy was just thinking that as I opened up 1 min ago.
@mikegalsworthy Please add number 3 to that. Add image descriptions to any pictures you post so that the large number of visually impaired people on Mastodon can understand what the images show. Twitter never enforced the use of image descriptions, but Mastodon has a different culture which is intended to be more inclusive.
Thank you.
@mikegalsworthy I think we have the potential of turning this platform into a great alternative for political organizers, would love to have more followers + follow others to expand my feed!!
@jaimeperez @mikegalsworthy what party, Jaime?
@Lee_in_Iowa @mikegalsworthy Iโ€™m a young, loud and proud Democrat, Lee!

@jaimeperez @mikegalsworthy Excellent! Iโ€™m an old loud and proud Democrat. Letโ€™s build something here. For starters, follow Adam Parkomenko. Iโ€™ll DM you other activists as I find them, and please do the same for me.

Hurray! We can rock โ€˜nโ€™ roll.

@mikegalsworthy
Waiting for your follow back.. ๐Ÿ˜‰
@mikegalsworthy greetings Mike, what app are you using for mastodon

@Recluse52
Mastodon app on iPhone... and mas.to server on desktop.

It's a great combo!

@mikegalsworthy thanks Mike thatโ€™s what I have.great minds think alike

@mikegalsworthy @Recluse52

Good suggestions about community-building!

Is there a way in the Mastodon iPhone app to switch between Home, Local, and Federated Timelines? I can't find it..

Metatext for iPhone does have this feature.

@CovidologyAutodidact @mikegalsworthy @Recluse52 I've seen lots of people suggesting that the third party sites are better than the Mastodon app. I'm currently using a browser both on phone and laptop (the latter with the advanced layout enabled, operates a bit more like Tweetdeck than the standard web layout)
KuJoe ๐Ÿ’ž (@[email protected])

Attached: 1 image So many people are having a bad first experience with Mastodon because they're using the official app which is lacking features, doesn't allow image uploads randomly, has random slowness, and doesn't give you easy access to the two most active feeds where you can find people (Local and Federated). Please switch to Metatext, Tusky, or Tooot for a better mobile experience (or even use a browser). Out of the >15k users that joined this week, over 11k are on the official apps.

Mindly.Social
@mikegalsworthy we are all awaiting your follow back ๐Ÿ™‚
@pierreehmann @mikegalsworthy he follows 1.4k and has 19k followers. I donโ€™t believe the goal is for him to follow others. A bit like capitalism; however, many that make this request do have good information to spread.
@mikegalsworthy finding this very confusing here - but will try my best!
@mikegalsworthy Good advice, and thanks for follow, Mike
@mikegalsworthy I agree Mike but I find people arenโ€™t reblogging enough, most are still just clicking favourite which does nothing to build the community, by all means favourite but please retoot too! I do it for things that Iโ€™m not particularly interested in but think that others might.
@weaniejeanie53 @mikegalsworthy I'm boosting, but I'm finding people just aren't following back.
@JaneJohnsonBakr @weaniejeanie53 @mikegalsworthy Just sticking my nose in here... I think it takes a while to build a following on any platform and this is no different. If you were on twitter and it implodes, you might get an influx. Time will tell, I guess.
@weaniejeanie53 @mikegalsworthy Limitations of mastodon user interface & understanding?
@weaniejeanie53 @mikegalsworthy the more Iโ€™m here, the more Iโ€™m enjoying it. On Twitter, Iโ€™m notorious for retweeting, so Iโ€™m happy that itโ€™s being encouraged here. Once I get my footing, Iโ€™ll start posting, which I do an irritatingly amount of over there.
