You’ll see, once they‘ll realise the full extent of climate change, they‘ll blame the scientists for not having warned them. They will say ‚you should have been more outspoken!‘ and ‚we would have backed you up‘.
@wblau In the words of investigative journalist Sarah Kendzior (author of Hiding in Plain Sight), "They feign shock to avoid accountability".

@wblau @_tillwe_ exactly! and that’s what I‘m afraid of for science/environment journalists, too. I think it‘s even possible that both groups will be chased down and silenced because they carry the knowledge of what has happened and whose fault it is.
@christianschwaegerl @wblau @_tillwe_ pretty hard to feign ignorance of the 1000s of articles and reports, IMO, but then again, we’re governed by the world champions of gaslighting.
@bberwyn @wblau @_tillwe_ Articles and scientific papers are a tool of the “reality-based community”, but modern discourse logic is largely disconnected from that. Instead, you can successfully spread any lie if connected to the right emotions stirred up before, see Putin and Maga. All it needs is the right “climate” for making these moves. As Wolfgang writes there will be an urgent need for culprits and it might just as well bring forth the biggest deflection operation ever.
@christianschwaegerl @wblau @_tillwe_ i know what you're saying, but we can't co-exist in the same world with irrational people, and I for one, am not going to assume a victim mentality. It's worse than suggested. A rightwing media channel in the US recently accused the "deep state' of steering hurricanes toward red states.
@wblau “they” who? Seems pretty implausible that anyone could ignore or discount the 1000s of stories and scientific reports published in recent years.
@bberwyn @wblau Most of the population already ignores science. The minority of scientifically literate people will be bullied into silence or just ignored.
@wblau Probably, but everyone who WANTED to know, knows about them, who have been warning on all channels and publishing research results and studies for a long time. Unfortunately, there are many media representatives, politicians and those responsible in the business/financial world who still do not want to understand it properly, who do not take their responsibility seriously.
@wblau
...and what they mean is: "you should have been more outspoken on the fact that climate change also affects the living standard of us the rich western elites and not only everyone else".
@Fischblog
*zwinker-smiley

@wblau

Insane people always have someone to blame.

It's never their fault.

@wblau Followed by ”now is not the time to assign blame” when presented with evidence.
@wblau
Does it really matter? The climate catastrophe will hit humans extremly hard and since it seems that there will be no true international intervention to mitigate the effects, we are doomed. You can scream, blame, cry or just sit there watching - it won't change a thing.
@mtklein @wblau It does matter. We can achieve a lot but only if we act – and not resign. Doomsayers tend to evoke self-fulfilling prophecies. They‘ll be doomed only if and because they say they were doomed.
@UJF
But what can be done without getting all countries to act together and ignore national interests? What can stop a global phenomenon if there is no global action?
@wblau
@mtklein @wblau Each country has gotta act now. They mustn’t use reluctance and inactivity of others as an excuse for their irresponsable waiting. Any contribution counts.
@UJF @wblau That's my wish, too. But I don't see this in a way that would help us. Therefore I think I am just realistic: nothing significant will happen and we are still heading towards 3°C - maybe then we should seriously start to prepare for extreme weather, draughts, floodings, migration in the millions, asking ourselfs how much individuality is justifiable and foremost tell the truth to our youth: We are fucked. Or am I completely wrong @luisaneubauer ?
@wblau @luisaneubauer @mtklein If you’d ask @MichaelEMann, he’d tell you that this is exactly where the denialists and inactivists want to lead us so that they can continue with their “business as usual” way of life beyond the tipping points. Maybe you should read Maja Göpel’s book “Wir können auch anders”. @beyondideology@twitter
@wblau Nah. They‘ll pretend that all of this was absolutely unpredictable and once the temperatures go down by one or two degrees, they tell us that the „exaggerated“ climate change has vanished. Just like a… flu. YOLO! ✌️
@wblau @HolyCrap The key is realizing how misleading the concept of average temperatures is. We usually confuse the extent of short-term peaks and mean temperature shifts as if that was all on the same scale. Take the ultrafrost in North America and consider how much of last summer’s heat it will cover up in average-based statistics. So an increase by 0.2 C (i.e. +1.7) can mean a summer peak of 5 C above normal for several days and much less rain during the forestal & agricultural growth season.
