A majority of Americans, including 77% of young people, approve of labor unions.

Just thought I'd pop in and remind you of that.

@rbreich I'm shocked nearly 1 in 4 young people don't...
@BoabPlz @rbreich because they're being told things like "in a unionized workplace, your hard work won't be recognized because everyone is going to get participation prizes even if they're slackers."
(or, also, because there are plenty of "young people" in the boss class who recognize that unions mean you can't send emails threatening to fire people for not donating nights and weekends of unpaid labor, i.e. "being hardcore")
@BoabPlz @rbreich when do they have an opportunity to really know? Their jobs often don't have unions, they don't learn about them in most schools

@rbreich

We also support ending capitalism but we can use unions right now to create a front from which to fight the systemic power imbalnce between labor and capital.

@rbreich Extremely important! We have to fight this wrong attitude that one can negotiate something alone. The group, like unions provide to power to really reach some useful outcome.
@rbreich I'm a member of a national union in Canada, I'm actually the VP of our local. I also approve of labour unions because they are the only reason we have any employment standards legislation in Canada.
@av @rbreich
I'm a union rep in my education union. I've seen what happens in states with no unions, their pay is half of what we make in my state, โฌ‡๏ธ job protections, benefits, etc. It's crazy not to be unionized.
@rbreich my husband, who is a card-carrying #libertarian always point out that libertarians are for #unions #elonmusk
@kristfist @rbreich so why do I keep reading that as "librarian"
@rbreich
I was raised to mock and despise unions, and it worked until I started to learn history, and Republicans went on the "free market" tear.
More unions. Sure, let's learn from past mistakes and make sure there are checks in place to prevent corruption, but they work.

@rbreich

Apparently by John Baer (who also designed the AFL-CIO logo) as seen in the December 15, 1953 issue of the Electrical Union World

@rbreich I think the question is not yes or no for unions, but where should be unions allowed and how much political power should they get. Discussing salaries with Mr Henry Ford? Yes, thatโ€™s their raison d'รชtre! No self-service at pumps in New Jersey? Really?
@rbreich will labor unions bring those jobs back from China etc ?
@rbreich from my wife's experience many unions are not as good as they used to be.
@rbreich I'm curious where this figure came from. My experience is not to support unions. Prior to OSHA, EPA and other laws protecting workers, I'd agree that unions were needed to speak for the little guy. Not so much today.

@HopsNbarley @rbreich

Then how do you explain the upsurge in unionization drives across multiple sectors, multiple levels of education, etc?

What's the common thread besides the proclaimed benefits of unionization that has people from backgrounds as diverse as Starbucks Baristas and Software Engineers wanting to form the first unions in their industry / company / sector?

@rbreich all the gifts - made in china
@rbreich Iโ€™m a physical therapist assistant for 17 yearsโ€ฆ. Healthcare workers need a union
@rbreich
Whether you like it or not, unionization is a birthright. Unfortunately, my "right to work" state's constitution plummets their power.
@rbreich Unions have a checkered history. On the one hand they accomplished all the things mentioned in the cartoon, but on the other they played a part in driving the steel and auto industries overseas.

@PeteF @rbreich

Other than the greed of Capitalists looking to outsource jobs for cheap, how did unions contribute to driving these industries overseas?

@rbreich

Born and raised in the great union town, Detroit.
Heck, my grandparents proudly lived on Reuter Street
and they dug up the rail road nearby looking for Jimmy Hoffa!
And then along came Reagan who successfully fouled the idea of unions along with โ€œwelfare queens.โ€

@GoAskAlice @rbreich Hi I was born downtown Detroit 1950. Booth Memorial Salvation Army Hospital. Grew up on Ferdinand Street in Corktown. Spent few years in Melvindale until I fled to SF 1969. Mostly lived in Hawaiโ€™i until recently. Aloha

@KatheO @rbreich

Aloha, K!
Born at Grace Hospital in 1957 and fled to SF in the early 80s. Loved it there and should have stayed.

@rbreich @davidgerard reckon they need to join them, then.
@rbreich We can also bring back the mixed economy that corporate greedheads are systematically destroying.
@rbreich Can I also point out at this time, that I discovered after the end of MediCare Open Enrollment that Medicare has slashed benefits for the next year? Like not adequeately covering drugs that are administered in a clinic or hospital? In my case, an intraocular medication for WMD that will not have an out of pocket expense of $2000 a month for me.
Inflation Reduction Act my Arse!
@rbreich labour unions means getting the best price for whatever you need to sell on a fair market. Trump and his family did not pay thousands of staff - just because they had no union in their corrupt pit hole, and they accepted the poverty that Trump gave them.
@rbreich only 77%? what the hell is wrong with the other 23%? crazy how many stand/vote against their own best interest.
@rbreich Aww I was saving this for my Christmas morning post.
@rbreich just not police Unions since they are rape gangs.
@rbreich am I wrong in thinking that the battle for control of state legislatures is the critical point for, well, ALL of it?

@rbreich we need modern day versions of this kind of thing.

So much of the progress we enjoy today is still being paid for by just a few decades of strong union membership and the pro-union narrative driven around the country at the time.

@rbreich thank you! A constant reminder
@rbreich American need a revolution.
@rbreich So I'm sitting in this meeting. Same meeting each time at multiple jobs. All management sits in a room for a presentation. C level HR and legal are introduced. Management already has a great relationship with the employees they say. An open door policy where everyone can be heard. Management is fair and regularly does compensation reviews. Unions steal $$ that could feed, house, or provide child care. Legally we can't be involved BUT make sure to rat if you hear anything.
