Was fortunate to watch this red fox hunt in a field, they as most animals are tuned into senses we have lost. Foxes use earths magnetic field to sense small critters movement beneath the snow.

These are fantastic photos!!! Thanks for sharing them <chef's kiss>

@MTnv Great pics! A statement that Foxes use Magnetic North in hunting tweaks my curiosity so I went looking and found the original study - from 2011 (https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/full/10.1098/rsbl.2010.1145)

Using the magnetic north is a hypothesis to explain why foxes appeared to be successful in certain orientations than others, but was by no means definitive.

While I could not find a follow up study, this one is the forerunner and it's left to others to disprove.

So I learned something today! Foxes do use Magnetism!

Directional preference may enhance hunting accuracy in foraging foxes | Biology Letters

Red foxes hunting small animals show a specific behaviour known as β€˜mousing’. The fox jumps high, so that it surprises its prey from above. Hearing seems to be the primary sense for precise prey location in high vegetation or under snow where it cannot be ...

@MTnv love this, thanks for sharing
@MTnv I like to be with her.πŸ˜€πŸ˜€

@MTnv

I love the "dance" of foxes, especially when they strive to hypnotize their prey......

@MTnv This is amazing! The last shot needs to become a climate action meme somehow. Thanks for the video!
@MTnv awesome experience for you. Lovely images.
@MTnv just scrolling and saw the words 'fox' and 'hunt' - very happy that my first assumption was wrong!
@MTnv They use their hearing. If you watch their ears, they make subtle independent movements to the right and left while their prey move under the snow. Those movements provide data that they use for basic triangulation to pinpoint to the exact location of their subnivean prey. They do trigonometry better by intuition than anything we can do with formal training.
@MTnv Wonderful captures. Thank you for sharing.πŸ™‚
@MTnv I want to buy a set of these prints. 🧑
