Cubans, Nicaraguans drive migration to US border in November

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Illegal border crossings by Cubans and Nicaraguans rose sharply in November while overall migration flows were little changed from October, U.S. authorities said Friday. The snapshot is the latest detailed account of who is crossing the border from Mexico amid preparations to end a Trump-era asylum ban.

@SkepticalEye the word "illegal", even in quotes, should never be attached to asylum seekers. Their crossings are completely legal, especially Cubans, who are guaranteed asylum.

I certainly don't disagree. The wording (WITHOUT the quotes) is the first paragraph of the Associated Press article.

By the way: The "guaranteed asylum" for Cubans was ended by the Obama administration.

Obama Administration Ends Refugee Policy That Favored Cubans

The so-called wet-foot, dry-foot policy let Cuban migrants stay if they arrived on U.S. shores but not if they were intercepted at sea. Now they face the same rules as people from other countries.

"By the way: The "guaranteed asylum" for Cubans was ended by the Obama administration."

I was unaware. Thanks.

US laws regarding the "legality" of seeking asylum in the US are an INSANE mishmash of contradictions.
1) NOBODY, not a legal US Citizen, not a person seeking asylum, is legally allowed to enter the US other than at an official border crossing checkpoint.
2) If someone seeks US asylum at a border crossing, they get turned away.
3) Nobody can apply for US asylum while they are outside the US.
4) So, de facto, you have to enter the US illegally in order to apply for legal asylum.
