Like Malcolm X, Nina Simone was a passionate activist and dedicated to the Black liberation struggle. She posed in this photo very intentionally as an homage to Malcolm. 🖤🙏🏿 #BlackFriday #BlackMastodon #Mastodon
@popcornreel she ought to caption it as "fly like a butterfly, pierce like a gaze".

@popcornreel and a native of North Carolina
@popcornreel I love her singing of Mississippi Goddam...and numerous other tracks.
@SteveA @popcornreel I just watched the video of that for the first time just recently. Powerful song.

@ParanoidFactoid Thank you — yes it is a fine documentary. I have talked about the documentary this week or last week here on Mastodon and yesterday recommended Nina Simone’s autobiography “I Put A Spell On You”. A must-read.
@popcornreel Haven't read. Thanks for the recommendation!

@popcornreel 25 yrs ago…my hubby surprised me w/ticket for our family to see Nina Simone @ Hill in A2.
It was 1 of her last live performances.
Our son was five…my memory of how the music moved him to dance in the isles!
Nina pointed & laughter, urging him on.
Soon my daughter (7) joined him.
Soon they were joined by others.
@popcornreel a special memory from 25 yrs ago…
My hubby surprised our family w/tickets to see Nina at “Hill Auditorium”.
Sam was 5-6 & Kate 7-8.
Sam, no longer content to “dance” in his seat, jumped into the isle.
Nina pointed, laughing, encouraging him to dance.
Kate joined her brother,
It remains a joyous, treasured memory.

At the age of 15, I had read the autobiography of Brother Malcolm He was THE influencer to me to become a anti racist activist. Thx a lot for him. RIP!

By the way, this pic shows DJ Lord of Public Enemy. And I'm a Hip Hop DJ.

Peeze to y'all! 🖖🏾 😎

@popcornreel I grew up listening to punk rock as a boy and when I got to 16 I started exploring old music. I came across Nina Simone and one of the songs written by her “Four Women” which blew me away. In all my years of listening to punk I never heard such controlled anger!

Did not know about the pose.
