Hey folks: Mastodon might get quote-toots as a feature. It might not. The folks who want the feature have reasonable, legit reasons to want it, and the people who are opposed to the feature have solid reasons they don't.

It's a tradeoff. Please let's not make it a crusade -- either way.

@fuzzychef I'm mostly trying to inform as to why - not necessarily push for it. Ultimately that decision rests on the maintainers of mastodon. But I think most people are somewhat irritated when the request is presented as "this must happen or mastodon will fail" - that's generally where I pushback because it feels like bullying to me. I've seen that argument too much in open source circles on feature requests.
@sri @fuzzychef There are other fediverse systems that support this, right? I wonder how a quote toot from one of those renders when viewed from a mastodon account.
@jasonbrooks @fuzzychef Yep, I believe there are two implementations of activitypub that lets you do quotetweets - so you don't have to get into crusade as @fuzzychef - they can find a server that implements it and it should interop. It might even outpace mastodon in popularity since it "implements" twitter norms.
@fuzzychef My name is me and I agree with this toot.
@fuzzychef are people suggesting users being able to disable their own toots being quoted , seems like that would be the protection element for those who need it
@fuzzychef Any chance of getting a usable search function?

@d4doome federated full text search? Not a chance.

FTS would rely on having server infrastructure that is about 2X what Mastodon currently has for sharing toots. Nobody is gonna pay for that.

@fuzzychef also given people can already link to posts within a post... they can just fork? if the fediverse grows even more across types of services, it's not going to do so homogeneously in terms of features anyway.
@fuzzychef the other thing is, as far as I know, that anyone with a server and a bit of know how could set it up for their instance.. Then it sinks or swims depending on adoption

@fuzzychef The main reason I would want the feature is to avoid hijacking someone else's thread. I often find myself inspired by something someone else wrote, but it's for a different reason than the author wrote it on their own thread. Currently, my choices are:

- ignore the thought
- hijack the thread with my own idea
- rewrite the thought on my own new post, as if the idea were my own

I find all of these options to be sub-optimal. However, I have no dog in this fight, either.

@fuzzychef I've been watching this current hot topic. If people want quote toots, this is an open source platform. Get to coding or pay someone to make it happen. You want it, get off your ass and go get it. I'm content with whatever this federation offers.
@Kschauer I was under the impression that the code had already been written, and the debate was about whether it was going to be merged.
@fuzzychef probably. Now if they pool their resources they can figure out their own server and problems associated there.
