I don't know. I am not a doctor or a veterinarian. When I or one of my animals are sick, I go to a doctor or veterinarian for help. When one of these kinds of people betrays my trust and harms me or others while seeking that help, what am I to think? What am I to do? I want to do something about this.

@notes how can we wish people like this well? How can we share goodwill with people who are harming others? As society goes into a freefall collapse, what is to be done with situations like this? How can we help each other?

I have two healthy cats and don't know what I'm supposed to do for care for them. I "rescued" them long before the veterinary care collapse in Santa Fe. I got them through Felines and Friends. The ironic thing is that through shelters and groups like this, they make you agree to care for your animals and guilt you about how inhumane it is not to care for them by taking them to a vet.

@t23

What do we do now about this situation where vets are retiring or leaving? How is it humane or responsible to adopt animals in a situation like this? What do we do? Surely the shelters and existing vets are organizing and working to change this. How can I help? What is the name of the coalition or organization?

When looking to adopt, places like Felines and Friends and the Santa Fe Humane Society remind you of things like "your companion animal will have to visit a doctor from time to time" and ask you questions about who your vet is, their number, and if you are willing and able to take your animals in for things like yearly vaccinations, and treatment for illness or injury.

What kind of questions are these when everyone knows vets aren't taking new clients and there is no emergency care here? If it is unethical not to bring your animal in for healthcare, how ethical is it to adopt out animals knowing healthcare is not available?

@notes "La Villa Real de la Santa Fe de San Francisco de Asis". "The royal town of the sacred faith of Saint Francis of Assisi". The irony... the suffering....
@notes as time passes, the graphics get loaded with content and intent . . . prepare

I wish my life had unfolded so my main concern was about #quotetoots.

We are still grappling with Penny's death and the difficulty knowing that it didn't have to happen, and that if it did and we still had an emergency veterinary clinic here in Santa Fe, it could have been reversed. And if the vet warned us that cats are commonly allergic to penicillin and what to watch for and what to do, we could have better prepared to help.

Too many things are wrong here to just let this situation go. This is an ongoing problem that has been going on for years and it needs to be addressed somehow. It is larger than just us and our horrible suffering and loss. I am concerned for our healthy cats should they need help, and I am concerned for anyone in Santa Fe who has animals in their family.

Maybe it didn't really happen and we will wake up and find this was all a bad dream.

@notes Many of us aren't for lots of different reasons I guess.
I think I still spend most of my time in my head.

@notes I'm so sorry. I didn't know that about cats and penicillin. I'll write about it in a future column so that more people will know.
@kkcthornton Thank you Kim. I am so sad that we didn't know more about this so we could know how to best help her. We are more than happy to share more details. I hope that people can be more familiar with this and know the signs and what to do if it happens to their cat.
