Marx 🐱 knows the true value of iconic Mac design: PowerPC G4 #Cube keeps your body warm while the TrashCan #MacPro upper vent will blow soft Sahara winds on your head.

Yes. He likes heat. A lot of it.

#cats #catsofmastodon #retrocomputing

Running #RetroPie or #AmiBerry get quite hot too (I set fan to only turn on when absolutely necessary ).

Of course Marx 🐱 sleeps with the head on these too.

Also, I can’t use my tablet & mouse 🤷🏻‍♂️ #cats #retrocomputing

So today I was watching YouTube on the Trashcan Mac Pro and it went to sleep in the middle of a video. Apparently something was blocking the vent and caused it to overheat to a point where it decided to just shut down.

Amusingly the Cube didn’t stop but maybe it would just have burned down had I not removed the cat.

True love never ends

@santiago a cat that appreciates interesting industrial design
@santiago G4 Cube probably still my favorite product design of all time. Alongside G4 iMac, just a tremendous time.

Marx 🐱 still happily sleeps on the warm upper vent of Trashcan   Mac Pro & Cube.

Ready to face the coming winter in the southern hemisphere.

@santiago I see you're not using macOS on that thing.

@santiago "Air vents blocked - remove cat and try again."

Too bad Mac OS has no such message.

😂

@santiago I had a cat who loved sleeping atop my mirror door drive PowerMac G4. The handles made good headrests and since the power supply was under him in the machine it got warm up top. He also loved to attack the cd drive door though the handhold loop when I remotely triggered it from the keyboard
@santiago I’m jealous of those two! I want to start collecting certain macs.

@santiago

Ohhhh De Bestie & warm Spot in de House!

ME would sleepie there too on a chill winter's day!

@santiago there's various routers supplied by European telecom companies that run hot (and similarly attract cats), I've often wondered if the folk with these routers often end up with a cat-shaped "not spot" in their wifi coverage 😺
@santiago she looks very tired. Let her sleep. She's cute
@santiago I used to have that problem with a dog and a space heater. And the dog was hard to move and quite confused and scared.

@santiago the cat knows the value of these designs.

I note in passing the Mac Studio has its hot air exhaust vent on the back. They're adapting...

@santiago @astraluma if not for sleeping, why so warm?
@santiago what do you do with that cube?!?! I once had one and sold it since it was so underpowered.
@santiago In my direct experience, a Cube will roast itself into complete dysfunction well before actually catching fire.

This is from last year: Marx 🐱helping scroll pages on the screen.

It took me a while to understand this behavior. Turns out it’s also because the screen is warm on his little paw. It’s an old Apple Cinema 20 inch. He doesn’t do it on more recent, colder screens.

@santiago how are the thermals on this configuration? It seems like you might need an electric catsink.
@santiago Your cat has excellent taste 😂
@santiago We we're talking about both of these machines over at Slashnet #vc channel. I'll pass this toot along. It was suggested that the MacPro6,1 is the modern day G4 Cube.
@santiago @teledyn still can’t believe we settled on calling that beautiful machine a ‘trash can’. I always preferred ‘r2d2’. Sadly put mine out to pasture a few months back after it simply failed to boot, but it did 9 years Trojan service (and only 1 GPU replacement along the way). It was a damn fine radiator too :)
@santiago nice to see a cube out in the wild. I really loved that machine.
