I'm beginning to realize that #sewing is primarily a cycle of rearranging small pieces of fabric, pinning, and waiting for the iron to heat up... and only a very small amount of time is actually spent stitching those pieces of fabric together.
@emery Well done, many people sew for years and never realise this! 🀣
@Freyalyn Back in the early days of the pandemic when we were making our own masks, I got the sewing machine out for the first time in several years. This was the result...
@emery Oh yes. Preparation often takes longer than sewing.
@Freyalyn The overall project takes much less time than it would if I knitted it though! (Not that one should knit a mask for anything other than warmth, but today I've been sewing little zipper bags.)

@emery Things like that are very satisfying to make, aren't they.

My sewing machine (and loom) are upstairs in an unheated room, so unusable until the weather gets warmer.

@emery i sewed masks early in the pandemic and have repaired or customized a few things here and there since, but i never had a sewing machine. you spend plenty of time sewing by hand. relaxing
@angelar I generally do mending by hand, but there's nothing like a machine for speeding up the process of sewing the wrong pieces together 😁
@emery That’s when you eventually buy a good iron that has a timer so it stays on and heats up quickly! (Birthday wish list - the Oliso. Props up on little feet, quite counterintuitive.Oh, so good! Or a proper steam reservoir iron. )

@Wonderdog Mine stays on for a while - but it does have an auto shutoff. And my sewing seems to be like, "iron, pin, sew, play around on the internet for a while, turn the iron back on, watch the next bit of sewing tutorial..."

That Oliso looks really spiffy! Mine's just a regular ol' Shark.

@emery I was just saying this to my friend a couple of days ago. Sewing is actually preparing to sew.
@emery don’t forget the time spent swearing at the pattern - anyone who says β€œyou do a lot of sewing, that must be very relaxing” has no idea!
@popchicken I only said one four-letter word this time! I'm not sure if I'm more restrained in my old age (ha) or just slightly better at sewing than I used to be.
