Fascinating that Zelensky extensively referenced American history, esp the American Revolution, to make his case that Americans should support Ukraine in their fight for independence.
I canโ€™t remember the last time a US politician mentioned Saratoga in a speech, but it makes sense as a touchpoint for how foreign support can change the direction of a war

@cgoodhistorian Even in a well-constructed speech, that line stood out. The number of references to history makes me think he knew this was a speech for the ages. #zelensky #ukraine
@TheMuseumGuy @cgoodhistorian I don't think that was aimed at the historians - although it's certainly gonna read well there. I think this was perfectly crafted to touch an American audience, harkening back to the times in our history we're most proud of.

@joekatz45 @cgoodhistorian Not so much aimed at historians, but in the end what makes a historic speech? Often, simply a good one.

At least for me part of what made it good is, as you say, how he crafted it to an American audience. He talked about American concerns, reached out to American dreams and moments of pride. I think history will look well on what he said, and on how he said it. #zelensky
