There are those who look at President Zelensky and the Ukrainians as if the aid request is merely self-serving—as if they don’t grasp that the fight with Putin and Russia is not only for their sovereignty but for NATO and all those who believe in and are dedicated to democracy and justice.
@StevenBeschloss It is of course easier to pretend it is self serving by the folks who do not actually believe in democracy and justice.
@StevenBeschloss There was a slogan in Czechoslovakia in 1930s “U Madridu se bojuje také za Prahu!” (“They are fighting for Prague at Madrid!”), of course with the relation to the Spanish Civil War. #Ukraine is now fighting for all of us!
@StevenBeschloss (and I am not getting into the discussion which side of the Spanish Civil War was better, for one, I don’t know enough about it).
@mcepl @StevenBeschloss no, Ukraine is fighting for Ukraine. Which is fine! I don’t have a problem with a country defending itself against invasion. But the idea that they’re fighting “for us” is just not true
@StevenBeschloss
Those who do are the fifth columnists undermining America
@StevenBeschloss Also need to realise that helping Ukraine fight Russia also helps degrade Russian military forces (apart from nuclear) without direct involvement, which has to be worth it.
@StevenBeschloss
Some of those people were happy to see Trump try to turn US military into a protection racket. No biggy when he wouldn’t affirm NATO Article 5. They smiled when he tried to bribe Ukraine to fabricate Biden dirt. Didn’t matter when he abandoned a military base to the Russians or release 5000 POWs in exchange for nothing. No logic, just self-centered ignorance.
@StevenBeschloss
More and more I’m see how unchecked threats to the weak among us—the weakest people, the weakest ecosystems, the weakest nations—grow to threaten the strong.
@StevenBeschloss The Ukrainians are fighting Russia so we don't have to.
@StevenBeschloss When I heard on the News that some US Republicans were now starting 'to question' the level of investment, I thought 'they don't get it'. Also, there are no US military involved in combat so all the heavy lifting is being done by Ukranians...we should all recognise how valiant Ukranian people are being
@StevenBeschloss It's because they've all been brain washed by the former guy and all his cronies.
@StevenBeschloss A bargain investment on our part. Our primary adversary is drastically weakened militarily and on the international stage without sacrificing the life a single US soldier. It will take a generation for them to rebuild their military after this.
@StevenBeschloss nothing to do with profiteering arms dealers then? Riiiiight.

@StevenBeschloss

So obvious, yet so many willing to argue otherwise. Hard to see those positions as anything other than bad faith. Per Putin's own words, his designs are larger... If the price for Ukraine were allowed to be acceptable, the next problem would only be bigger.

UA doing the democratic world a real solid in respect to RU alone, without even considering the lessons China takes in regards to Taiwan. If RU appeared competent at all, they may think differently.

@StevenBeschloss But is all this worth the risk of a thermonuclear explosion that would change the world forever?
@markcobb @StevenBeschloss maybe Russia shouldn’t threaten to use thermonuclear weapons then?
@wooliex @StevenBeschloss The US wants global domination. If not, why still even have NATO? NATO is what Putin is afraid of being surrounded by. Get rid of NATO and appease Putin. The US is doing the same exact thing to China now. The US is the bad guy. We're the bad guys.
@markcobb @StevenBeschloss NATO exists because Russian imperial expansion is as much a threat today as it was in 1850 and 1950. Countries apply to join and can leave any time. A strong self defense posture doesn’t make somone the Bad Guys.
@wooliex @StevenBeschloss "A strong defense"? We spend more than the next 10 biggest countries in the world combined. We have 900 bases around the world. The world sees us as the number one source of terrorism. Our leaders publicly laugh at the thought of sending drones to kill people. People are waking up though. Military enlistment is way down for a reason.
@StevenBeschloss it's not really about Ukraine. Some people on the Right are simply ideologically aligned with Putin (in the 'culture war') and would prefer to see Russia win. All the other outbursts ('$45B!', 'corruption!', 'Nazis!', 'Hunter Biden', 'WWIII!' etc.) are just disingenuous attacks meant to justify their tacit support for Putin.
@StevenBeschloss Or maybe, they know exactly what the stakes are and they’ve joined the other side.

@StevenBeschloss

It's much more than that.

Muscovi is also a determined eco-criminal, they see advantage (for their oligarchs fortunes, & that's all that matters in the Crooks & Thieves state) in global warming, frozen tundra becomes agribusiness, arctic sea, & its seabed, becomes exploitable.

Fossil fuel economy is existential for them, world of renewables is anathema.

Even when there's no customers they're so nihilistic they'll burn coal & oil & vent gas as revenge against russophobe world.

Idea of being part of the world doesn't compute, it's legacy of muskovi taking on oriental despotism from being collabarateurs, against other KIEVan Rus peoples, with Mongol invaders.

It delivered czardom, & imperial fantasy, which has been ever thus, except Gorbachev, who tried to bring them into world.

I reckon.

@StevenBeschloss
There’s a lot of small minded, ignorant people who have no clue what is at stake in Ukraine.
@StevenBeschloss these people want NATO to fail and Putin to win. It is a true red-brown alliance.

@StevenBeschloss

Ukraine's war is, in truth, the West's proxy war with Russia.

@StevenBeschloss
We’re being lied into our next decade of war…..again.
I’d really hope the American people would catch on by now.
The U.S. doesn’t want peace or a quick end to the war. They want a long drawn out conflict because it would weaken Russia and provide financial opportunities for the west.

@StevenBeschloss we wanted healthcare and education. Instead we’re going to piss it all away on our next decade of war.
What the fuck ever happened to the anti war left?
@StevenBeschloss The comment thread is so Twitter-esque, it's oddly comforting.
@StevenBeschloss They don't care. They blame Zelenskyy for Trump getting impeached and losing the election, so they want revenge. They're kind of like Putin in that regard...
@StevenBeschloss It's popular to be pro-Russian in the GOP. Remember the t-shirts worn at Trump rallies, I'd rather be Russian than a Democrat. It's amazing how stupid people can be.

@StevenBeschloss

The GOP just wants their major dark $$ donor flush with cash again.

@StevenBeschloss That, or maybe they they think it wouldn't serve their master: Putin. The Republican Party has gone completely to the dark side.
@StevenBeschloss Also is a proving ground for some of our weapons systems against a near peer conventional force.
@StevenBeschloss NATO is a war promoter and doesn’t further democracy.
