Embarrassed by how much I miss Twitter's quote-tweet feature on here. It was mostly used for evil but I tried to use it for good!!
@caseynewton I agree Casey. I miss it for writing, but enjoy the lack of it for reading and experiencing. It also is a reminder of how important design is for experience of social media. The experience of a linear feed with no adds is amazing I think. Along with the possibility of exploring servers. Having a local feed for ones server can mean a lot if engaging in a server of a specific population.
@carl @caseynewton yes, exactly what I thought.... But how do I visit another server) community?
@mintmich @caseynewton I guess the easiest way is to have several accounts, where you explore different use cases. One account for your knitting community and the other for your electric cars. ;)
@carl @mintmich @caseynewton Wouldn't lists accomplish this without having to switch between accounts? I need to experiment with them.
@akaBeth10 @mintmich @caseynewton im on Tusky on Android and have so much more to explore!

@mintmich @carl @caseynewton the easiest way I’ve found to visit another server is to open a web browser and type the server name in the address bar no additional acct required:
Ex.
Mas.to
Mastodon.world

Default view is explore. You can see posts, trending hashtags, and news.
From the side bar, you can tap to view the local and federated TLs

Also some 3rd party apps let you sign into multiple servers, but you have to create separate accounts.

@smadre75 @mintmich @carl @caseynewton Browsing other servers’ local timelines is one of my favorite aspects of Mastodon! Sadly quite a few seem to hide those unless you have an account.

I just wanted to add that there are apps such as Toot! and Metatext that will indeed let you add and browse those servers without having an account, if their local timeline is public. At least Toot! lets you interact with them using your other signed in accounts.

@smadre75 @mintmich @carl @caseynewton as @anchel suggested, it would be great with a Tweetdeck-like interface that let you add local timelines of other servers as columns. Has anyone here run into such an app yet?
@Jickelsen @smadre75 @mintmich @caseynewton @anchel the people at tweetdeck are working on it, called @ivory
@carl @Jickelsen @smadre75 @mintmich @caseynewton @ivory Ah, got excited for a moment, but I see it's only for Mac OS?

@Jickelsen @smadre75 @carl @caseynewton @anchel

Ah! There's the same question directed at @Gargron over at Reddit. Official answer: Servers are not supposed to be communities, a pan-server group feature is in the pipeline..

a few others chiming in. #tooot apparently knows? Haven't seen it yet.

Are there plans to allow 'how many time a toot has been favorited' to be used as a sort criteria? If not, why was the decision taken to not use...

@Jickelsen @mintmich @carl @caseynewton @anchel Yes! There’s a 3rd party app for #mastodon called ‘TheDesk’ with a tweetdeck like interface that allows you to add multiple columns. The interface isn’t as aesthetically pleasing as some other, but it def allows for a lot of flexibility. It’s for Mac and PC https://thedesk.top/en/

@smadre75 @carl @caseynewton

It's what I also did. On mobile though, it's not that East... And there should be a bookmark feature for servers/communities.

The current situation is more of a hack than a feature situation

"I miss it as a writer but I enjoy its absence as a reader"
--- brilliant.

That really is the deeper cultural rationale for a no-QT policy: it respects the reader (of the original post) over the writer (of the reply).

The lack of QT forces the writer of the reply to be more of a reader of the original post. Therein lies the source of true dialogue. Be a reader first.

@the_roamer @caseynewton indeed! Im thinking anout the fact that we have two ears, and one mouth. That should mean we should listen at least twice as much as we talk. Listen with intent and purpose. As a reader, understanding the intention of the writer, enables so much deeper dialogue. And providing tech tools that support such affordances is very valuable.
