I have been happy at mastodon.online but it might be time to move. I feel I need a more focused space. I am a #writer, and a #screenwriter mostly, so I am considering both #writing.exchange and #screenwritingspace . I follow several people from one and from the other. Nice people, as far as I can tell from the distance :) If anyone would like to comment on those (or other writers' instances), it might help me make my mind

#instances

@davidfm For me, I have several areas of interest ex. Writing, fiberarts, breaking and feature news, cat and dog pictures (don't judge me!), Photography and art, etc. So I consciously chose an instance that would cut across multiple categories.

I keep hearing about how important it is to use hashtags on Mastodon. Not sure what that looks like in action, but maybe the community you seek is available that way? I'm still figuring out this stuff too!

@KarenStrickholm Yes, trying to figure out that too. I have several areas of interest too (I don't judge your cats and dogs!), but, because of the moment I am in life and work, I feel I need to focus. Not only on Mastodon :-)
@davidfm I hear you. And ultimately, these social media apps should confirm to our needs, not the other way around. I wish I understood more about how to leverage hashtags. Oh well, all in due time!

@KarenStrickholm @davidfm
If you are on v4.0.2 you can click any #hashtag then follow/unfollow it as if it was a person. So, for me, it doesn't matter that everyone on my instance is fairly random because I only really focus on certain topics, regardless of who I follow. It is very powerful.

Having said that, if there is an instance dedicated to say #writing, then your 'Local' view is prefiltered and you won't see #Bluegrass musicians talking about #hamradio, which is nice.

@EggKnees @KarenStrickholm yes, I know about following hashtags, but thanks. The problem is that many interesting people don't use hashtags so often
