I’m in #FacebookJail for posting this historical photo for #Chanukah (#Menorah in the window of Rabbi Akova Boruch Posner, opposite Nazi Party headquarters in Kiel, Germany; 1932).

W.T.H. 🤦🏼‍♀️
I’m assuming someone w/no knowledge of #history is bothered by the Nazi flag.

Tweet is still up:

“Happy Chanukah (Hanukkah)! May your candles burn brightly, and the light of the menorah brighten your spirit. (sunset here is 4.18pm) (I know tonight is only two candles) Photo: 1931 Germany Wikimedia https://t.co/I2ui2gsO5j”

@kegill it's possible the Facebook algorithm(?) recognized the swastika & blocked because of that. (I don't know what you call their automated image blocker thing. Software?) Anyway-

@SomeOldLady @kegill

It isn’t really helpful, but I agree. It’s almost certainly the algorithms detecting the swastika. No humans involved. And those algorithms really suck at context. Big false positive rate:

@nazgul @SomeOldLady @kegill yep, that's what it looks like to me too. Really unfortunate

@jdp23 @SomeOldLady @kegill

Don’t get me started on the appeals process.

@kegill Is it "someone"? Or is it just some automatic program that scans images and without looking at context, bans images with Nazi symbolism? This happens on Facebook a lot, where posting even a link to the CDC or a comment about having COVID can trigger all kinds of scans for "false narratives" which then actually end up banning even peer-reviewed science articles or government notices. From other indications, the whole Twitter moderation system is broken now, many engineers fired, etc.

@prokofy @kegill Facebook and Twitter don’t have moderation systems. They have PR mechanisms that are designed to give the appearance of caring by randomly blocking.

Meanwhile both platforms are designed to maximize ad revenues by maximizing engagement.

@hallam @kegill That's one way of putting it.
@kegill I got 30 days of Facebook jail for mentioning Springtime for Hitler in a discussion of The Producers.
@kegill Is ridiculous I had a post remove because it had a picture of Mussolini, I was criticizing something he said. Without context this rules are terrible!

of course this is an algorithm.
it's unbelievable that our mind always projects people on the other side of the screen.

and it's unbelievable that you people use, foster and promote these "services" making them rich and more powerful why you waste the only thing you really own, your life time.

ohh ..
and btw ..
why you don't you understand/realize/learn that it's an algorithm?
well, the algorithm hides that information from you so you don't grasp that reality.

@kegill

> after a few too many “false positives” on high profile accounts became embarrassing (for example, then President Obama’s Facebook account was taken down because he recommended the book “Moby Dick” and there was an automated flag on the word “dick”), someone at Facebook instituted the Xcheck program to effectively whitelist high profile individuals so that flags on their account would need to be reviewed by a human before any action was taken.
