In the Southeast, power company money flows to news sites that attack their critics

Alabama Power and Florida Power & Light hired the consulting firm Matrix to help shape their fortunes. Matrix funded six sites that covered politics, filling a void left by the decline of local news.

@bobwyman @online-news #Alabama has a real scandal here, this is awful.
@bobwyman
nice for this to be covered, but also: lol. underwhelming drama of opposing forces here
@online-news
@bobwyman FPL. Why am I not surprised🙄. Reminds me of how Lenny Curry tried to privatize and sell off JEA.

@bobwyman @online-news

These are not real news sites that they are sending money to. They are called "pink slime" websites. They are fake news sites created by a right-wing firm called Metric Media. You can check them here:

Yellow Hammer Times is on the list.

That is a ridiculously long list. Reminds me of the Salem Media radio con. https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/otm/divided-dial

@online-news @bobwyman Thank for posting this, few seem to realize how corrupt our system is in every sector at every level. We are reaching a breaking point

@bobwyman @online-news

I think we will find this to be a widespread practice, not just with environmental issues, but with Covid as well.

@bobwyman @online-news
At what point do we start to assume that this is standard practice not just for energy companies, but for all sorts of people in those states? Unbe-fucking-lievable that energy prices can be gouged to pay for hit pieces and that it, apparently, doesn't seem to matter to most people.
@bobwyman @online-news this is an important story. Too often people don’t stop to think about why a media outlet is pushing a particular story.

@bobwyman @online-news

This is so totally corrupt.

A core tenet of U.S. journalism holds that reporting should be fair and transparent, unaffected by financial backers who may have their own hidden interests. News outlets are supposed to hold the powerful to account and give people the knowledge to make choices as informed citizens.

Those driving the news agenda are often "the special interests, the monied interests."

@bobwyman @online-news sounds about right based on things I’ve been seeing.
@bobwyman @online-news
I wish I found this more shocking and less expected.
@bobwyman @online-news I'm near fed up with voters not voting smart and I can see the point of this guy: "Alabamians bitched about high power bills, but when they had someone that would address it, they abandoned me," Dunn says. "So let them struggle to keep the lights on."
Except that voter suppression and gerrymandering play a big role in who can vote and the weight of their votes. As a "tea party conservative", Dunn might have had something to do with that in Alabama.
